To begin with, Martin Cooper grew up in Chicago. In 1950, he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in Electrical Engineering. In 1957, he obtained his Master’s degree from the same institute; finally, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2004.

After four years spent in the USA Navy where he served on destroyers and submarines, he worked for a year in a telecommunications company. Cooper was hired by Motorola in 1954, and began working on the development of portable products, including the first portable handheld radios for the Chicago Police Department in 1967. Then, he headed cellular research at Motorola, and on the 3rd April 1973, as the then general manager of the Communications division in Motorola, New York, Cooper made the first mobile call. He held in his hand a large prototype object like a brick, heavy as a laptop (1.5 kg), and equipped with an antenna length of 10 cm. With this mobile phone, which he designed from scratch with the support of a team of seven people, he made the first outdoor phone call without being in a car. He chose to make the first call to Joel Engel, his rival and nevertheless colleague at Bell Labs, responsible for the research and development of the AT & T operator at the time – the idea of mobile ‘phones became a reality. On the 17th October 1973, he filed his patent for a radio / telephone system, which was granted on the 16th September 1975. He is therefore regarded as the inventor of the modern mobile phone.
