He then merged with Chip Ganassi Racing which later became Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, staying with the team until 2009, winning the pole for the Daytona 500. He then became a part of Michael Waltrip Racing and started driving a Toyota Camry; he finished in sixth place in the Daytona 500, but had several setbacks due to accidents and problems with engines. He did well during 2011 which led to a good start in 2012, but he would fall short. This was the same for his 2013 season as he had mixed performances, including some top 10 finishes, but his winless streak was to extend to 218 races.
In 2014, he became part of Furniture Row Racing and would drive a Chevrolet SS before joining the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Season. The following year, he finally managed a second place spot and the momentum led to him finishing in the top ten in 14 races out of the first 15. In 2016, one of his best performances was a 0.010 second loss at the Daytona 500 and then he finally got a first place finish at the Coca-Cola 600.
