After matriculating, he had a scholarship offer from the University of Missouri, but opted instead to go to Hofstra University, where he performed well through his college career – in 2005, he was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team, meantime setting a school record of 2834 yards from 182 receptions for 18 touchdowns.
Colston joined the 2006 NFL Draft, and was selected as the 252nd overall pick at the 7th round by the New Orleans Saints. He had a strong performance at the minicamp, and was put into the starting position for the first week. He ultimately helped the Saints reach the playoffs with a 10-6 record, and would reach the NFC Championship Game against the Chicago Bears, but lost to end the season, but Marques was still widely celebrated, finishing second for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
