His interest in filmmaking began when he was fourteen, after buying a super-8 camera at a garage sale from a neighbor. However, upon returning, Borchardt continued to pursue his interest in film at a local university, and later started producing and writing Halloween radio dramas, which won him a fellowship from the Milwaukee Art Futures Board.
Mark actually became famous after filmmakers Sarah Price and Chris Smith decided to film Borchardt’s attempts to raise funds for his unfinished film “Northwestern”. However, after the whole project went down the drain, Mark decided to finish “Coven”, another film he had started years before. When it was finally completed, Price and Smith assembled their footage into “American Movie”, which was then signed by Sony Classics, and entered the 1999 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize. This launched Borchardt among the popular faces of television and film, and he has since made numerous appearances in shows such as “Late Show with David Letterman”, for whom he served as his election correspondent in 2000.
