She went on to enroll into Kenyon College in Ohio, however, her life changed when she developed a chronic fatigue illness. Having moved back home, her sickness became even worse. Having spoken to doctors at Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she got a clear idea on what she was dealing with.

Nevertheless, she continued writing and in 2001 published her book entitled ‘’ Seabiscuit: An American Legend’’. The book went on to become a best-seller and was positively reviewed by the critics. The book was based on her previously published essay, and was focused on a biography of a race horse of the same name, eventually being nominated for more than 20 awards and was eventually adapted into a movie in 2003; Laura won William Hill Sports Book of the Year award, and the movie received positive reviews as well, and was nominated for an Academy Award. Being a best-selling author, Hillenbrand received public acclaim and recognition – The Economist stated ‘’the research is meticulous, the writing elegant and concise, so that every page transports you back to the period’’.

Laura published her second book entitled ‘’ Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption’’, focused on a biography of Louis Zamperini, a World War II hero and Olympic athlete. It ended up being adapted into a movie as well, and ‘’Unbroken’’ hit the theatres in 2014; produced and directed by Angelina Jolie, it grossed over $163 million at the box office. Having sold over 10 million copies of her two books combined, Hillenbrand received public praise and recognition. As of 2016, the number of books sold was at 13 million.
