Who is Lahmard Tate?
Born on 7th January 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Lahmard Tate is the brother of actor Larenz Tate, and a recognized thespian and producer in his own right, known mainly for his role as Billy in “Barbershop”. Lahmard is 5ft 6in (1.69m) tall and weighs 145lbs (66kgs), with unknown vital statistics.
Upbringing
The youngest of three children, Lahmard spent his early years in the heart of Chicago, brought up by parents Peggy and Larry Tate. In 1974, the family relocated to California and the brothers were enrolled into a drama program offered by Inner City Cultural Centre.

Inspired by the success of their classmate Malcolm-Jamal Warner after he landed a role in “The Cosby Show”, the three youngsters, now adolescents, began working hard to make a name for themselves, despite not taking the classes seriously at first.
First Roles
Future fans saw Lahmard on-screen for the first time in 1987, the year he was cast as an extra in the memorable cop series “Hill Street Blues”. In the same year, the then-teenager made an appearance in “Barfly”, a romcom based on the decades Charles Bukowski spent in Hollywood and his numerous hijinks.
In 1990, Lahmard was cast as a drug buyer in the sports drama movie “Across the Tracks”, in which Ricky Schroder and Brad Pitt played two wildly different brothers with a complicated relationship. Lahmard’s diligence and hard work paid off, as he was then cast to play Raymond Harris in the action crime production “Night of the Cyclone”, which touched delicate topics such as human trafficking.
Following a cameo in the law series “Equal Justice”, Lahmard was seen in “Seeds of Justice”, a TV movie which aimed to raise awareness about the impact of cocaine on the youth of Los Angeles. Despite struggling to break free of bit roles and stereotypes in the acting industry, Lahmard kept his head up, and worked odd jobs between movies to earn a living.
Notable Roles
Now in 2000, Lahmard was cast for his first recurring role in Sarah-Finney Johnson and Vida Spears’ “Moesha”, the family-friendly series with stars such as Brandy Norwood and William Allen Young. Appearing in nine episodes of the award-winning show as Jerome helped Lahmard broaden his acting portfolio, and more doors were opened for the actor, which led to his breakthrough role in “Barbershop”.
Directed by Tim Story and set in Chicago’s South Side, “Barbershop” was a humorous and star-studded production featuring Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Eve, and other industry heavyweights.
Fans hailed the movie for its honesty and diversity, and “Barbershop” became a box-office success story, raking in $77 million worldwide against a $20 million budget.
Two years and several small projects later, Lahmard was cast as Lil’ Bit in “Method & Red”, a comedy series about two rappers who move into an affluent and predominantly white neighborhood, and begin clashing with the other residents who take offence at their wild lifestyle. As one of the main characters, Lahmard played Method, Red’s loveable sidekick. Sadly, for unknown reasons the series was never renewed for a second season.
In 2006, Lahmard played X-Cell in “Rocky Balboa”; starring Sylvester Salone, who also wrote and directed the movie, it explored the main character coming out of retirement decades after his first fight to go up against Mason Dixon. Despite being nominated at the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, the last installment of the “Rocky” saga received positive reviews from viewers.
From 2009 to 2015, Lahmard went on hiatus, returning with the role as Dexter in “Civilian Life”, and a recurring role as Duane Keith David in “Unsolved”, a series which investigated the deaths of Tupac and Biggie.
Joining the cast of the crime drama series “Power” for the first time in 2020, Lahmard had a starring guest role as Kamaal Tate in an episode of season six, with fans speculating that Kamaal would return to the show after killing Carter, one of the main characters.
As it happens, Lahmard returned the following year, with a recurring role in “Power Book II: Ghost”, playing his brother Larenz’s on-screen brother.
In a January 2020 interview, Lahmard and Larenz spoke to Good Morning H-Town about the show, its controversial sex scenes, and the love they receive from fans.
Personal Life
Despite having over 100,000 Instagram followers, Lahmard doesn’t give fans many sneak peeks at his personal life – despite sharing the odd childhood snap – and instead prefers to keep his feed professional with interviews and clips and information from upcoming projects.

Lahmard has never been publicly linked to anyone, nor has he posted anything regarding a possible love interest. However, the actor has let it be known that he’s a staunch supporter of Black Lives Matter, and celebrates Juneteenth – also known as Black Independence Day – every year.
Motivational quotes and photos with friends, most of whom are fellow actors, also take up part of Lahmard’s social media feed, with inspirational snippets urging his followers to challenge themselves and be their best version. The talented performer believes in giving back to his community and supporting small black-owned businesses which he occasionally advertises on his page.
The “Power” star is also a firm believer in God, and frequently mentions his faith on social media.

In spite of a lengthy hiatus and gaps between projects, some gossip outlets claim that Lahmard is worth over $10 million. However, more reliable sources confirm that the figure is estimated at $1.5 million, mostly thanks to his recent work in “Power”.
According to industry insiders, Michael Rainey Jr earned $20,000 per episode when “Power” premiered in 2014, and now earns over six figures after becoming the show’s lead, so it’s reasonable to estimate that Lahmard earns up to $30,000 depending on his screen time and other factors.
As for Larenz, he is said to be worth $4.5 million thanks to his notable roles such as O-Dog in “Menace II Society”. The other Tate brother and Larenz’s twin, Larron, began his career as an actor before finding his passion in directing, and is said to be worth over $2 million.
