Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a noted German costume and fashion designer, art director, photographer, as well as an artist. To the public, Karl Lagerfeld was perhaps best known as a director of the privately held company called “Chanel”, which was established in 1909 by the popular fashion designer Coco Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld was born in 1933 in Hamburg, Germany. One of his first jobs in the fashion industry was working for French designer Pierre Balmain as his assistant for three years before he started working for Jean Patou. Prior to his big breakthrough, Lagerfeld had designed several collections, and had collaborated with other fashion designers. During the 1970s, Lagerfeld had  an opportunity to create costumes for various theatrical productions, but finally reached the peak of his career when he joinedthe  “Chanel” company, with which he was able to showcase his artistic skills.

Throughout his career, Lagerfeld designed costumes for such well-known celebrities as Kylie Minogue and Madonna, as well as dressed the characters of the “Callas Forever” biographical film, starring Fanny Ardant, Jeremy Irons, Joan Plowright and Jay Rodan. In 2011, Karl Lagerfeld joinedthe  “Hogan” company, and “Macy’s” corporation.

In addition to being a designer, Lagerfeld also excelled as a photographer, and had his photographs printed in such famous magazines as “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar”. For his contributions to the fashion industry, Karl Lagerfeld was rewarded with The Couture Council Fashion Visionary Award, which he received in 2010.

Karl Lagerfeld resided in Paris, France for most of his later life. He died in the American Hospital in Paris on 19 February 2019.
