Moglia is the eldest of five children to parents Giovanni Giuseppe Moglia and Frances McLarnon. He went to Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx where he became the captain of both football and baseball teams. He later graduated from Fordham University in 1971with a degree in economics and went on to earn a masters degree in secondary education from the University of Delaware in 1974. He was part of the football coaching staff in several schools, including being the defensive secondary and special teams coach at Lafayette College, before becoming the defensive coordinator at Dartmouth, with the team winning two Ivy League Championships. After 16 years of football coaching, he left to pursue a career in business, but his net worth was already well-founded.

Joe worked at Merrill Lynch for 17 years as a member of several executive committees before becoming the CEO at TD Ameritrade in 2001. Under his leadership, the company’s client assets grew from $24 billion to over $300 billion; its market capitalization rose from $700 million to $12 billion and had six consecutive years of record earnings performance. In 2008, Moglia stepped down as CEO and became the company’s new chairman in order to return to his football coaching career. His net worth is still increasing.

Moglia took a volunteer job as an assistant coach for the University of Nebraska football team. He then became the head coach of Virginia Destroyers in the United Football League (UFL) in 2010. A year later, he was named President and head coach of the Omaha Nighthawks before becoming head coach of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers – in his first season, his team won the 2012 Big South Conference Championship, and he has led the team to another two conference championships and three National Playoffs. He was named a finalist for National Coach of the Year three times and awarded the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year, twice Conference Coach of the Year, and National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame’s Man of the Year.

In addition, Moglia became the recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Sharp Trophy for Leadership, Columbus Citizens Foundation Leadership Award, National Italian American Foundation Special Achievement Award in Business, and American Institute for Stuttering Lifetime Achievement Award. Moglia has been inducted into two high school halls of fame, and the Omaha Business Hall of Fame as well as receiving three Honorary Doctorates.

Joe Moglia is the only person to have published books on both football and investment. He released his first book “The Key to Winning Football: The Perimeter Attack Offense” in 1981 and published his second one, “Coach Yourself to Financial Success: Winning the Investment Game” in 2005. He has also written articles in several national football coaching journals. He was invited as a keynote speaker at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and American Football Coaches Association in 2010 and 2011, respectively. His fortune continues to grow.

Moglia has four children with his first wife and is now married to Amy Harvey, with whom he has two kids.
