Newsom grew up in a very idealistic family, and she was really restricted in being allowed to watch television or listen to the radio. However, she was exposed to a lot of music as her parents played various instruments. She attended Waldorf School, and during her time there she studied theatre. Growing up, she also learned to play the piano before transitioning to playing the harp, initially smaller Celtic harp before moving on to the full-size pedal harp. After matriculating, she attended Mills College where she studied composition and creative writing. During college, she played the keyboard as a part of the indie band The Pleased, and she soon dropped studies to focus on a career in music.

Joanna first gained attention joining Nervous Cop’s self-titled collaboration album. She then worked on two EPs entitled “Walnut Whales” and “Yarn and Glue”, homemade recordings which would catch the attention of record producers. This eventually led to her being signed to the label Drag City, which started to increase her net worth. Soon, she would make her debut album entitled “The Milk-Eye Mender” which was released in 2004, then toured to promote the album and performed with other musicians including Weird War; she also appeared as a guest on the self-titled album of Vetlver. She also made music for Vashti Bunyan’s “Lookaftering” and for the horror film “The Strangers”, so slowly gained a strong following, and continued to make music as a guest on other albums. Joanna then released her second album entitled “Ys” in 2006, and supported the album by performing in various events. The album got a lot of exposure and she also appeared in the music video “Kids”.

In 2010, Newsom started working on her third album entitled “Have One on Me” which was released in February. She then appeared as a guest composer on The Roots album “How I Got Over”. The following year, she released singles and worked on a few music videos, and also contributed vocals for “The Muppets”, and made several other television appearances. Her next project would be as a part of the track “Kindness be Conceived” by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. She then narrated the film “Inherent Vice” before releasing another solo album, “Divers” which peaked at the top spot of the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart, all the while adding steadily to her net worth.

For her personal life, it is known that Joanna married actor Andy Samberg in 2013, prior to which she had a brief relationship with Bill Callahan. Joanna and Andy reside in Los Angeles in a house previously owned by the parents of actress Mary Astor. The couple also have a child together.
