Jim Yong Kim was born on 8 December 1959, in Seoul South Korea. Known also as Kim Jong, he is the President of the World Bank, and in such an important position that in 2015 Forbes magazine ranked Kim as the 45th most powerful person in the world.

Jim Yong Kim moved to the USA with his family when he was five years old, and they settled in Iowa, where his father taught dentistry. Kim was educated at Muscaline High Schooll, and then graduated with an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1991, and a PhD in anthropology from Harvard University in 1993.

Kim has been extremely busy during his working life. He co-founded Partners-in-Health (PIH) in 1987, which initially concentrated on treating common infectious diseases in the home at minimal cost in comparison to hospitalisation, firstly in Haiti and then other countries, and extremely successfully. Kim Jong then joined the World Health Organisation in 2003 as advisor to the director, and subsequently being appointed head of the HIV/AIDS department the following year, introducing programs which PIH had developed, again with considerable success, such that the incidence of the disease dropped significantly in the next five years.

Concurrently, Kim had been lecturing at Harvard Medical School since 1993, eventually holding professorships in medicine, social medicine and human rights. At the time of his eventual departure in 2009, Kim held positions as Chairman of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Director of the François Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health. Specific details of his remuneration for these positions over a period of more than 20 years are vague, but they certainly added considerably to his net worth.

In 2009, Kim Jong was appointed to the Presidency of Dartmouth College, the first Asian American to hold such a post in an Ivy League university. During his tenure of three years, Kim directed the development of several innovative programs, calling on his considerable experience in health care and international affairs to promote success again, in these important areas of international concern.

In 2012, President Obama nominated Kim Jong for the position of President of the World Bank, Citing HIS experience in international affairs and his hands-on approach to health problems around the world. He was subsequently elected the 17th, President, the first not to have a substantial background in either politics or finance, but conversely the first to have first-hand knowledge of health issues in developing countries.

As head of the World Bank, Kim controls a budget of more than $40 billion a year, which is utilised on developmental programs in more than 188 countries. As part of a long overdue efficiency drive, he recently announced plans to cut administrative costs by $400 million, reorganizing the bank’s infamous bureaucratic structure.

In his personal life, Jim Yong Kim is married to Younsook Lim, and the couple has two children.
