Son of an accountant father and clerk mother, nothing could indicate that Jean-Peal would be drawn to fashion. However, his maternal grandmother introduced him to the fashion world, and in no time, Jean-Paul started making his own drawings. Instead of attending any fashion school, he began sending his sketches to famous couture stylists, which drew attention from none other but Pierre Cardin, who took him under his wing as an assistant. After a year working with Cardin, Jean-Paul joined Jacques Esterel, and then Jean Patou for a couple of years, while in 1974 he was appointed as boutique manager of one of the Pierre Cardin’s boutiques in Manila.

Just two years later, Jean-Paul produced his first collection, and since then has become one of the most prominent fashion designers known for using unconventional models for his exhibitions, such as older men and full-figured women. He has also become popular for his designs based on the street wear of the time, which earned him the nickname, ‘enfant terrible’.

Starting in the late ‘80s, Jean-Paul introduced his label Gaultier PARIS, which is a couture line, then JEAN’S Paul Gaultier, Eyewear Jean Paul Gaultier, and Jean-Paul Gaultier Argent, while also started Junior Gaultier, which was later rebranded to JPG.

Thanks to his budding popularity in the ‘80s and ‘90s, he was used to create costumes for several films, which include “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover” (1989), then “Kika” (1993), “The City of Lost Children” (1995), “The Fifth Element” (1997), and most recently “The Skin I Live In” (2011), no doubt adding to his net worth.

Jean-Paul became sought by celebrities to design their costumes too; in 1990 he worked with Madonna for her Blond Ambition World Tour, designing her infamous cone bra, while also working with her on the 2006 Confessions Tour. Furthermore, he collaborated with Kylie Minogue for her KylieX2008 tour.

Jean-Paul has also launched several fragrance lines, including “Classique” for women in 1993, then “Le Mâle” in 1995 for men, and “Fleur du Mâle” in 2007, also for men, among many others.

Regarding his personal life, Jean-Paul is openly gay, and was in a relationship with his business partner, Francis Menuge, from the start of his career until Menuge’s death in 1990 due to AIDS-related health problems. Since then, Jean-Paul has kept his relationships in low profile, hence, no real information is available in the media about his current private life.
