Shortly after the release of their debut song, Jatavia was arrested and charged with aggravated identity theft – she used stolen credit card numbers to buy clothes.

She pleaded guilty in June 2018, and was sentenced to spend 24 months in federal prison, being released in March 2020. During that time, Yung Miami continued to promote their music, and their debut mixtape entitled “Period” out came in May of the same year. It was their big break, since it peaked at No. 16 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, received positive reviews ,and ranked 26th on Rolling Stone’s 30 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2018 list. Later that year, they gained enormous popularity after Yung Miami made an appearance in the music video for Drake’s number-one hit single “In My Feelings”. In August 2018, the girls released the documentary film “Point Blank Period”, that follows their success in the music industry.

City Girls’ debut studio album entitled “Girl Code” was distributed in November 2018. It features such artists as Cardi B, Jacquees, and Lil Baby, and peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard 200, attracting positive reviews, and spawning two singles, “Twerk” and “Act Up” – the former featured Cardi B, and reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, achieving platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The single “Act Up” became their highest-charted single to date, reaching No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Thereafter, Jatavia Shakara was transferred to a halfway house, and to celebrate her release, she recorded the track entitled “JT First Day Out”. The girls then started recording a new album, and released it under the title “City On Lock” in June 2020. It includes guest appearances from Lil Durk, Yo Gotti, Lil Baby, and Doja Cat, and was generally well-received by music critics, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard 200 chart. In March 2021, their unreleased song “Twerkulator” went viral on the highly popular social media platform TikTok, after famous dancer Layla Muhammad did the choreography for the song; it was eventually released two months later.
