Jatavia Shakara Johnson spent her early years in Carol City and Liberty City, Florida. Little is known about her parents, except that she had a tough childhood since her mother was a drug addict. Career Beginnings
Prior to becoming a popular rapper, Jatavia Shakara Johnson worked at Whole Foods and Burger King to make ends meet. She also performed in nightclubs, strip clubs, and at block parties. She developed her love for rapping at a very young age, and started performing as a rapper in her teens. In 2017, she co-founded the female rap duo called City Girls, together with her longtime friend Caresha Romeka Brownlee a.k.a. Yung Miami.
They soon released their debut studio track entitled “Fuck Dat Nigga”, which they promoted through social media, and by paying DJs to play it in local clubs – the song is a diss track for their ex-boyfriends for not giving them cash when they asked. She pleaded guilty in June 2018, and was sentenced to spend 24 months in federal prison, being released in March 2020. During that time, Yung Miami continued to promote their music, and their debut mixtape entitled “Period” out came in May of the same year. It was their big break, since it peaked at No. 16 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, received positive reviews ,and ranked 26th on Rolling Stone’s 30 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2018 list. City Girls’ debut studio album entitled “Girl Code” was distributed in November 2018.
