Jann is the son of secular Jewish parents, who divorced when he was in his teens; as a result, he and his two sisters were sent to boarding schools. He matriculated from the Chadwick School, and then enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a part of the Free Speech Movement, and also contributed a column “Something’s Happening”, for the student newspaper The Daily Californian. However, he quit studies after two years, and in 1967 started Rolling Stone in San Francisco, with the help of his mentor Ralph J. Gleason, and a loan from his family, and the family of his soon-to-be wife Jane Schindelheim.
His magazine started slowly developing, and he was discovering new talent in different areas of the creativity, including writing, as he discovered Hunter S. Thompson, Cameron Crowe. Joe Klein, Joe Eszterhas, and P.J. O’Rourke, then photographer Annie Leibovitz, when she was still at the San Francisco Art Institute. Thanks to the rising popularity of the magazine, Jann’s net worth was in a constant growth. After ten years of work, Jann moved the magazine to New York City, however, during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, magazine’s popularity declined, which continued through the ‘90s. Nevertheless, Rolling Stone was back on track with the start of the new millennium, after Jann hired Will Dana as chief editor.
Most recently, Jann launched a video game-focused website, Glixel, the success of which has also contributed to his already staggering net worth.
Thanks to his contribution to music and magazine publishing, Jann has received several prestigious awards, including the Norman Mailer Prize, Lifetime Achievement in Magazine Publishing in 2010, and back in 2004 was co-opted onto the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, so having some influence on who is inducted, to the displeasure of some.
Regarding his personal life, Jann was married to Jane Schindelheim from 1967 until 1995; the couple had three children. Since the divorce, he has been in a relationship with fashion designer Matt Nye; the two have adopted three children since then.
Politically he is a liberal, and has been known to contribute to the campaigns of several Democratic party candidates, and to various liberal organisations.
