Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Mackay is the son of Jack Mackay, an Associated Press correspondent, and Myrtle Mackay, a substitute school teacher, and is a grandson of Russian Jewish Immigrants. He attended Central High School and also worked on the side as a clerk in a men’s store, and as a golf caddy. He later pursued a degree in History at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities while lettering in golf. He then attended Stanford University Executive Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Mackay got into business right after college when he worked at Quality Park Envelope Company. His love for golf also came into play when he joined the Minneapolis’ Oak Ridge Country Club where he played golf with various businessmen in the area. The connections he cultivated at Oak Ridge helped in his career as a salesperson, making him number one in his company.

When he was 26, Mackay purchased a failing envelope company that he later turned into a multi-million dollar organization, now known as MackayMitchell Envelope company and one of the top producers of envelopes in the US. Even after selling the company, he still holds equal partnership in it.

Mackay was also known to have chaired Minnesota’s Stadium Task Force, promoting with other businessmen the building of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in the late 1970s. In 1984, he along with other business leaders also helped stop the owner of the Minnesota Twins baseball team from selling the team to outside investors by purchasing thousands of tickets. His success in his various endeavours and businesses all helped establish his wealth through the years.

After his success in the business field, in 1988, Mackay also started to share his knowledge with the world by writing his first book “Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive”, which became an instant success and spent 54 weeks in the New York Times bestseller list. His other books “Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt” and “We Got Fired! … And It’s the Best Thing that Ever Happened to Us” also reached the number one spot in the New York Times bestseller list, and other books that he has authored entitled “Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty”, “Pushing the Envelope”, “Use Your Hear to Get Your Foot in the Door”, and “The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World” also became huge successes, and made it into the prestigious list.

The successes of his books also lead Mackay to become a motivational speaker. Plus he is currently writing a weekly column for Universal Uclick in which he provides inspirational advice through his pieces.

Additonally Mackay has also serveds as a member of the board of various groups; he is currently sitting on the board of the Minnesota Orchestra.

In terms of his personal life, Mackay has been married to Carol Ann for 45 years and they have three children and now nine grandchildren together.
