Gordon attended Sequioa High School, and after matriculating, went to San Jose State University. After studying there for two years, he transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, eventually earning a degree in chemistry. After graduating, he then went to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where he would earn a PhD in chemistry four years later. Around this time, he did postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University in he Applied Physics Laboratory.

Moore started his career with Beckman Instruments as part of the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. However, he would soon leave the company along with other employees to found the Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation, which would become highly influential, although the eight members who left Shockley would become known historically as the “traitorous eight”. Gordon would become the director of research and development of Fairchild, increasing his net worth significantly. During his time there he would create what would be known as Moore’s law; Gordon observed that components in a dense integrated circuit doubled every year, and would continue to do so. He then made a revision, making the forecast every two years. The prediction has become a very significant factor in the development of the semiconductor industry.

In 1968, Gordon along with Robert Noyce would found the company NM Electronics which would later become Intel Corporation. Moore served as vice president and would become president of the company in 1975. Four years later, he became the chief executive officer and chairman of Intel, and his net worth would steadily increase with the company’s success. He held that position until 1987, and then a decade later he was named as the chairman emeritus. Intel has become one of the most successful companies in the computer industry, developing significant inventions and innovations for various computer components.

Gordon has acquired many honors and awards over the course of his career. In 1990, he was given the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President George H.W. Bush. Eight years later, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Computer History Museum. In 2001, he received the Othmer Gold Medal for his contributions to science, and a year later he was given the highest civilian honor by the United States with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He’s also been awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor, Dan David Prize, and was inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

For his personal life, it is known that Gordon has been married to Betty Irene Whitaker since 1950, and they have two children. The couple is known for their various philanthropic work, mainly as part of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Moore is also fond of fishing, and travels the world to catch various species.
