In 1982, Fred started playing in PGA Tour events but found little success, and didn’t officially become a member of the tour until seven years later. He struggled with consistency and missed the cut in nearly half the tournaments he played. However, he did get some big successes including a Buick Open fifth place finish and Chattanooga Classic T-3 which increased his net worth. In 1991, he increased his success with top 10 finishes in five tournaments, and finally got his breakthrough in 1992 when he had his first PGA Tour win at the Shell Houston Open. In 2009, he won his second Champions Tour major at the US Senior Open, and followed it up with another major victory the following year at the JELD-WEN Tradition, the first player to win a PGA Tour sanctioned event after knee replacement surgery.
