Born Frank Mitchell Beamer on the 18th October 1946, in Mount Airy, North Carolina USA, he is a retired American Football coach, best known to the world as the head coach of the Virginia Tech football team, as he served in that position from 1987 until 2015, becoming one of the longest active coaches in NCAA Division I FBS. Frank was raised in Fancy Gap, Virginia, and when he was seven years old, Frank used a broom to keep burning trash on one pile, and when the fire was out he brought the broom in, however, there were remains of amber on the broom, and it ignited a gasoline can, which exploded in front of him. Frank was severely injured, as his chest, neck and shoulders were burnt, however, he now only has scars to remind him of the incident, thanks to his brother who saved him from certain death.
Frank attended high school in Hillsville, Virginia, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball, earning 11 varsity letters. After high school, Frank enrolled at Virginia Tech, where he continued to play football, as a starting cornerback. Following his graduation from Virginia Tech he continued his education at Radford University, but also started his coaching career, becoming the assistant football coach at Radford High School, serving in that position until 1971, gaining valuable experience and knowledge in order to improve his career.
In 1972 he was appointed as graduate assistant coach for the University of Maryland, College Park, but stayed there for only one season; it was his first season as coach in a university team. After that, he was appointed as assistant coach at The Citadel, where he spent the next seven years, increasing his net worth to a large degree. His last two seasons at The Citadel, Frank was defensive coordinator, and in 1979 he became defensive coordinator for Murray State University, and then became head coach of the university`s team in 1981; his first head coaching position.

Furthermore, he received the Big East Coach of the Year Award three times, 1995, 1996 and 1999, and was twice the ACC Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005, and in 2010 he received the Joseph V. Paterno Coach of the Year Award.
Also, his team won the ACC Coastal Division five times, in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011, and Big East Conference three times, in 1995, 1996 and 1999.
