He graduated in 1980 and then enrolled at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine, from which he obtained an M.D. in 1984.
Drew completed his medical residency at USC County Hospital, and after finishing his studies found work at Huntington Memorial Hospital in his hometown of Pasadena as chief resident. After a couple of years, he opted for private practice.
