David Rockefeller was the youngest son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and the grandchild of John D. Rockefeller – one of the five richest ever people in the world, who was the founder of Standard Oil Company – and Laura Spelman Rockefeller. He was raised in the Midtown district of New York City with his five siblings. He attended the experimental Lincoln School in Harlem, after which he entered Harvard University, from which he graduated with a BA degree in Science in 1936. Afterwards, he went on to complete his post-graduate work at Harvard, studying economics, and later transferred to the London School of Economics (LSE). Then he returned to the US, where he earned a PhD in economics in 1940 from the University of Chicago.

Right after he finished his education, David began working as a secretary for the New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, for a year and a half and then he became the assistant regional director of the US Office of Defense, Health and Welfare Services throughout 1941 and 1942. He then joined the direct war effort, in US Army intelligence, and by the end of the war he had reached the rank of captain.

After the war ended, he joined the Chase bank, which was associated with the Rockefeller family; at that time its CEO was his uncle Winthrop W. Aldrich. His first job at the bank was as assistant manager in the Foreign Department, staying connected with more than 1,000 banks throughout the world. He slowly climbed his way up the ladder, and in 1960 he became the CEO of the bank, all of which certainly increased his net worth. During his reign, the Chase bank extended the number of correspondent banks to more than 50,000, becoming the largest bank in the world. In the 1960s, Rockefeller founded the Chase International Advisory Committee, consisting of several businessmen such as John Loudon, Gianni Agnelli and Henry Ford among others, serving as chairman of the committee until 1999.

David is also recognized as a supporter of the Republican Party, endorsing several presidential candidates of the party, and has also started a fund-raising group “Republicans Who Care”.

During his career, he received numerous prestigious honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects in 1965, Medal of Honor for City Planning by the American Institute of Architects in 1968, International Leadership Award in 1983 by the United States Council for International Business, George C. Marshall Foundation Award in 1999, and many others.

Regarding his personal life, David Rockefeller married Margaret McGrath in 1940, with whom he had six children and subsequently ten grandchildren. He is also known as a philanthropist, including donating $100 million to Harvard University in 2008. Besides that, he also works with his family organization “The Rockefeller Foundation”. He died from congestive heart failure at his residence in Pocantico Hills, New York, on 20 March 2017.
