In 2006, he returned to Bill Davis Racing driving the No. 22 Caterpillar-sponsored Dodge, finishing fourth at the Richmond International Raceway. Besides that, he scored two top-ten finishes by the end of the season.

In 2007, Dave failed to qualify for three races in the Cup Series, however, he made his season debut in London. He eventually finished 31st with a score of 30 points. He signed a contract to run No. 66 Prism Motorsports Toyota, but during the season, he had problems with sponsorship, which resulted in him failing to qualify for three out of four races, and ending the season ranked 41st earning $2.3 million. As of the next year, Dave appeared in 29 out of 36 races, with an average start of 32.0 and average finish of 38.2. In the 2011 season, he joined Tommy Baldwin Racing, where he participated during the whole season. Having missed only one season race, Dave was ranked 32nd and gained $3.2 million. He announced his semi-retirement in 2014, having competed in 473 races during his career.
