In the late 1950s, he enrolled at San Francisco State College, and started playing the guitar and became part of the folk scene of San Francisco, performing in local cafes. His songs were often imbued with a playful sense of humour, as can be seen from the title of one of his songs “Why do I miss you if you’re going away?”
Concerning his professional career, Hicks joined the Charlatans, the band based in San Francisco in 1965. In 1968, he founded the Hot Licks , with members David LaFlamme, Sherri Snow, Christine Gancher, John Weber and Jaime Leopold. In 1969, the band released the studio album “Original Recordings” produced by Bob Johnston; in the album stood out the singles “Canned Music”, “I Scare Myself” and “It’s Bad Grammar, Baby”.
