After matriculating from a high school in 1985, she relocated to Japan, the land of the rising sun, where she was cast in the musical entitled “Cosmopolis”, composed by the renowned and successful dancer, actor and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
After garnering some success with her performance, she returned to the US, where she planned to build her career as a professional dancer. Her lucky break came in 1987 after a dance choreographer noticed her in a club, who soon after offered her a dancing part in David Bowie’s “Glass Spider Tour”, garnering even more experience, success and recognition. The tour, conceived as a theatrical show with intricate costume designs and choreography, included performances in various European countries such as Austria, Italy, and Spain.
Rising through her ranks, the following year she featured as a dancer in a romantic movie entitled “Salsa”, which opened the gates for a potentially different career to dancing, and the actress soon began landing acting roles in various TV shows.
Acting Career
In 1988 she made her TV debut with a recurring role in the comedy-drama series entitled “Dirty Dancing”, in which she portrayed Penny Rivera, appearing in 11 episodes. The following year she starred as Nikki Alvarez in the Emmy-winning daytime soap opera “Santa Barbara”, receiving a nomination for a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Female Newcomer. In the following period, she mainly landed single episode appearances in various TV shows, such as “The Man in the Family”, “Jake and the Fatman”, and “Reasonable Doubts”.
In 1993 she starred in the made-for-TV movie “12:01”, followed by other appearances in TV films such as “Island City” and “Fast Company”. In 1995 she landed the role of Toni Sanchez in the commercially successful drama movie “My Family”, opposite Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales. In addition to earning $11 million at the box office, the film garnered positive reviews from the critics, and several awards and nominations.
After making minor appearances in “Sentinel” and “The Underworld” in 1997, Constance appeared as Marcela Quintanilla in the biographical musical drama “Selena” opposite Jennifer Lopez, followed by her role in the “Union Square” as Gabriella Diaz, which earned her a nomination for an ALMA Award in the category Outstanding Actress in the Comedy Series.
In 1998 she starred as Toni in six episodes of the fantasy comedy series “Early Edition”, followed by her appearance in the sitcom “For Your Love”. After starring in the HBO movie “Dancing in September”, she made several single episode appearances in popular shows such as “Ally McBeal” and “The ‘70s Show”. The show garnered substantial success and popularity among all audiences throughout its six-season run, but after 120 episodes, following the finale of the sixth season in 2007, the show was canceled due to lower ratings.
After making one-episode appearances in TV series such as “CSI: Crime Investigation” and “According to Jim”, in 2011 she was cast as Regina Vasquez in the teen/family drama “Switched at Birth”. Her portrayal of Regina as Daphne’s hard-working single mom earned her several nominations and awards, including the ALMA Award for Favorite TV Actress- Supporting Role. The show ran for five seasons, concluding in 2017. During the same year, she lent her voice to Imelda in the popular animated movie “Puss in the Boots”.

After landing the recurring voice role as Camilla Diaz in the animated series “Undone”, Constance portrayed Dr. Corts in the Netflix sitcom “Alexa& Katie”. The show ran for three seasons, and in 2020 it was announced that the third season would be final. Later that year she appeared in the sitcom “Connecting”, which is set against the backdrop of the COVID 19 pandemic in the U.S. However, the show was short-lived as it was canceled after just four episodes.
Personal life
Regarding her dating history, she dated NBA yoga trainer and guru Kent Katich in 2000, and the couple welcomed their daughter on 5 February 2009, who they named Luna Marie Katich. At some point, the couple even announced their engagement, which proved to be short-lived as they parted ways in 2015; the reason for their break-up remains unknown. After her separation from Kent, Constance has not been linked to anyone.
