Chico is the son of the famed musician Robert DeBarge, Sr. and his wife Etterlene, and is part French, part African-American. He grew up in his hometown, and from an early age was influenced by R&B, soul and funk music, since his siblings and almost the whole family were a part of the group DeBarge. However, as he got older, Chico decided not to perform with the family group, and focused on a solo career. He signed a contract with Motown Records in 1985. and a year later his debut album came out, entitled “Chico DeBarge”.
