He attended the University of California, Santa Cruz graduating with a degree in history, an interest he got from his mother. He also attended Institut d’études politiques (IEP) de Grenoble, and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program.

In 2009, Fukunuga made his first feature film entitled “Sin Nombre”, which he wrote and directed, and again received numerous awards and positive reviews – the film about a Honduran teen who’s looking for a better life received accolades including Best Foreign Film award at the Austin Film Critics Association and the Florida Film Critics Circle Award, to name a few. Fukunuga himself also received awards including a New Director’s Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and a Directing award at the Sundance Film Festival both in 2009.

Another film that Fukunuga made which received a lot of praise is “Jane Eyre” starring Judi Dench and Michael Fassbender, recognized at the Academy Awards for its costume design, and multiple recognitions in various other award-giving bodies. The success of his films also helped tremendously with his wealth.

Aside from his thriving career in film, Fukunuga also made his mark in television with the HBO series “True Detective” – he directed all of the episodes during the show’s first season that earned him Outstanding Director at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Fukunuga may be more known as writer/director, but has also done plenty of work behind the camera, working as a cinematographer on the films “Handmade”, “Sikumi”, and “Team Queen” to name a few.
