Carol was born into a family of mixed origin – from her mother’s side English, Scottish, Welsh and German decent, and from her father’s side Irish. When she was still a child, Carol started a career as a child model, and was known as Carolyn Lee. At the age of 15, she discovered that her name was already taken by another actress so she modified it into Lynley. In 1957, Walt Disney saw her photo on the cover of “LIFE” magazine, and decided to cast her in “The Light in the Forest” (1958), Lynley’s debut as she received credits in the opening titles and starred next to James MacArthur. She continued appearing in roles on the Broadway stage, soon followed by Hollywood screenings, in which she was noted for her acting in the controversial drama “Blue Denim” (1959). Although it was a demanding role of a teenage character who dealt with unwanted pregnancy and abortion, Carol portrayed the role very well and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the category of Most Promising Newcomer – Female. Her best known roles came during the ‘60s, and she is today best remembered for appearing in movies such as “Return to Peyton Place”, “Bunny Lake is Missing”, “Under the Yum Yum Tree”, “The Cardinal”, “The Pleasure Seekers” and “The Poseidon Adventure” in which she performed the Oscar-winning song “The Morning After”, although her voice was in fact dubbed by singer Renee Armand. Also in 1965 Carol posed nude for the March edition of “Playboy” magazine; her net worth was rising steadily.

During the ‘70s Carol starred in TV series including “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” and “Fantasy Island”. Among her many other appearances were in television series such as “The Big Valley”, “It Takes a Thief”, “Mannix”, “The Invaders”, “Night Gallery”, “Hart to Hart”, “Kojak”, “Hawaii Five-O” and “Charlie’s Angels”. Her friendship with reporter Nelson Aspen resulted in Lynley appearing in several showbiz segments too. In 1999 she discussed her career on “TV Guide Television”, in 2003 she appeared in Australia’s no.1 morning show “Sunrise” in which she talked about the remake of “The Poseidon Adventure” and in “New with Nelson” she discussed her Oscar picks and all-time favorite winner – Frank Sinatra. When it comes to her most recent acting engagement, Carol starred in a short film “Vic” (2006), directed by the late son of Sylvester Stallone, Sage Stallone.

Privately, Lynley was married to publicist Michael Selsman from 1960 to 1964 and from that marriage she has a daughter, director Jill Selsman. Carol was a close friend of actor/dancer Fred Astaire and is quoted in the “Fred Astaire: His Friends Talk” (1988) book. She had an 18-year long affair with David Frost.
