Calle 13 is a Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican hip hop band formed by René Pérez Joglar, born on the 23rd February 1978 in Hato Rey, and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, born on the 10th September 1978 in Santurce. René Pérez Joglar who calls himself Residente, and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez or Visitante, met when they were two years old when Visitante’s father married Residente’s mother, Flor Joglar de Gracia, who was an actress and worked in a local acting troupe. Although their parents divorced later, the stepbrothers remained close and Visitante often visited Residente in a gated community in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, in the street called Calle 13.
Visitante has a computer science degree, but became a full-time musician and producer, while Residente wanted to become an accountant, but earned a master of fine arts degree in animation, illustration, sequential art and film from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, USA. Regardless of their education, in 2004 the brothers formed a band named after the street Calle 13, signing a record deal with White Lion Records, and recruited their half-sister Ileana Cabra Joglar – aka PG-13 – to sing the backing vocals. In 2008, Calle 13 recorded their third studio album, entitled “Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo”, which reached No. 89 on theBillboard 200, No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Latin, and No. 19 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums charts, receiving one Grammy Award and five Latin Grammy Awards.
