Bradley Whitford is an American-born Primetime Award-winning TV and film actor, perhaps best known for his role in the NBC TV drama “West Wing.”

Age, Early Life, and, Education Background

Bradley was born in Madison, Wisconsin, under the Libra zodiac sign on 10 October 1959, which makes him 63-years-old as of 2022. He was born to George Van Norman and his wife Genevieve Louie, who is a poet – he was raised together with his brother, David Whitford, who is now an established article writer. The “West Wing” star spent his childhood in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and was brought up in a Quaker household.

Whitford went to Madison East High and was very active in the school’s theater. He matriculated to Wesleyan University, majored in English and Theater, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. He then learnt drama at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.

Theater and TV Appearances

Bradley made his TV debut in 1985, playing Dillart in the American thriller “The Equalizer”, and then landed a recurring role in ABC’s soap opera “All My Children.” He later appeared in an episode of the show “ER” entitled “Love’s Labor Lost.”

Bradley met Aaron Sorkin, an Academy Award-winning playwright, film director and screenwriter, when he landed the role of Lt Jack Ross in his play “A Few Good Men”, and they began a recurring professional relationship.

Whitford made his career breakthrough in 1999, when he was cast (as Josh Lyman) in Sorkin’s  drama “The West Wing”, playing a lead role until it ended in 2006 after airing for nine seasons – he also wrote the episodes “Faith Based Initiative” and “Internal Displacement” in the show’s sixth and seventh seasons.

Whitford later played Danny Tripp in Sorkin’s show “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”, and was later selected for a role in the British BBC show “Burn Up” in 2008. He also made a stage appearance in “Boeing-Boeing” in the same year.

In 2010, Bradley played the lead role of Dan Stark in the Fox comedy “The Good Guys,” which also starred Colin Hanks. He then featured in three films in 2011: the USA Network drama “In Plain Sight” playing a man struggling to combat paranoia, “The Mentalist,” and “Law & Order: Los Angeles.”  In 2014, he starred in the show “Transparent,” which aired on Amazon, and was then was selected to play the lead role of Roger Peralta in the show “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

Bradley recently guest-starred as Commander Lawrence in the last episode of the show “The Handmaid’s Tale”’s first season, and received a Primetime Emmy Award (Outstanding Guest Actress/Actor in a Drama Series) for his critically acclaimed performance. In 2019 and 2020, he was cast for a lead role in the NBC musical comedy entitled “Perfect Harmony.”

Film Appearances

1986 saw Whitford make his film debut in “Dead as a Doorman”, and he subsequently played a starring role in the Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon-created horror movie “The Cabin in the Woods,” which was filmed in early 2009 but not released until April 2012. He later appeared as Dean Armitage, a neurosurgeon and a father, in the 2017 horror film “Get Out.”

People describe Bradley, who has been a columnist for The Huffington Post, as a person with ‘liberal views.’ He is a member of Let America Vote’s Board of Advisors – the organization was created by Jason Lander, who was formerly Missouri’s Secretary of State, and its goal is to terminate voter suppression. He is also a board member of Marshall L Saunders-founded Citizens Climate Lobby organization, which sensitizes people to build strong relationships with elected officials, to influence climate policy. He also campaigned for nominee Mary Burke in several Wisconsin-based universities during the Wisconsin gubernatorial election (2014).

In 2019, he made a public appearance together with “The Handmaid’s Tale” cast as they addressed issues relating to abortion rights.

Bradley received three Golden Globe Award nominations for his role in “West Wing.” He has won three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Critics Choice TV Award in 2015, and has also bagged two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Bradley is a married man; he started dating the American actress Amy Lauren Landecker, famously known as Sarah Pfefferman in the comedy series, “Transparent”, in 2015. They dated for four years, and eventually tied the knot on 17 July 2019.

Whitford was previously married to the sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” lead actress Jane Kaczmarek – they wed in August 1992 and welcomed three children together, Frances Genevieve in 1997, George Edward in 1999), and Mary Louisa, who was conceived in late 2002. Sadly, the duo announced their divorce in 2009 and finalized it in October 2010, ending their 16 years of togetherness.
