Early life, family and education
Betty grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Hyattsville, Maryland, raised an only child by her parents, Hanson and Benedicta Gabriel. Although she doesn’t have any siblings, she used to spend a lot of time with her cousins growing up, with whom she shares a very close bond.

After matriculating from a local high school in 1999, Betty moved to Ames, Iowa, to study animal science at Iowa State University. During her time there, she started dabbling in acting, and after receiving her Bachelor’s degree in 2002, she moved to Chicago, Illinois where she started working as an actor and a dancer in Chicago theatre, appearing in local productions of plays such as “Black Nativity” and “The Comedy of Errors”. In 2014, she graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, with a Master of Fine Arts degree in drama.
Roles in movies
Betty made her film debut in the 2009 short drama “Maidenhead”, written and directed by Julian Grant. Two years later, she appeared in her first feature length movie, the family drama “In Memoriam”.
In 2015, she had a role in the biographical drama “Experimenter”, centered on a famed social psychologist, Stanley Milgram, who performed a series of controversial psychological experiment which tested humans’ willingness to obey authority. The movie was written and directed by Michael Alemreyda, starred Peter Sersgaard, Anthony Edwards and Jim Gaffigan, and won several awards, including the Exposé award at the 2015 Political Film Society Festival. In the following year, we saw Betty star in the horror blockbuster “The Purge: Election Year”, the long-awaited sequel to the 2013 film “The Purge”.
In 2017, Betty starred alongside Daniel Kluuya and Allison Williams, in Jordan Peele’s directorial debut film “Get Out”, an existential horror exploring the relationship between White and African Americans.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and as well as receiving wide critical acclaim, it was also a box office hit, grossing more than $255 million worldwide, against a $4.5 million budget. “Get Out” has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for the Best Original Scenario, while Betty won the 2017 Invisible Woman Award by the Women Film Critics Circle, and was apparently considered for an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting actress, however, she didn’t make it into the final selection.
In the following year, Betty played one of the leads in the horror thriller “Unfriended: Dark Web”, the sequel to 2014’s “Unfriended”, and also had a supporting role in the award-winning sci-fi action thriller “Upgrade”, written and directed by Leigh Whannell.
In 2019, Betty appeared in the drama “Human Capital”, based on the eponymous novel by Stephen Amidon, which starred Live Schreiber, Marisa Tomei and Peter Sarsgaard. Betty is currently working on a yet untitled horror movie, directed by Bishal Dutta, based partially on an Indian legend, which is expected to see a theatrical release in early 2023.
Roles in TV series
Betty made her TV series debut in 2016, when she appeared in seven episodes of the Amazon Original biographical drama “Good Girls Revolt”, created by Dana Calvo, and which starred Genevieve Angelson, Anna Camp and Erin Darke. In the same year, she appeared in two episodes of the horror comedy mini-series “12 Deadly Sins”, produced by YouTube, and which followed a group of people from a small town in California, who are being terrorized by supernatural forces in the days leading up to Christmas.
In 2018, we saw Betty play the role of Maling, a human paramilitary officer, in the second season of HBO’s hit sci-fi western series “Westworld”, created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The series is loosely based on the 1973 movie of the same name, as well as its 1976 sequel “Futureworld”, and is set in the mid-21st century, depicting a fictional technologically advanced Wild West themed amusement park, populated solely by androids. It has received almost universal critical acclaim, winning numerous awards including nine Primetime Emmys.
From 2018 through 2019, Betty starred in eighth episodes of the sci-fi thriller drama “Counterpart”, created by Justin Marks, and which starred J. K. Simmons, Olivia Williams and Harry Lloyd.

Betty is a very private person, who prefers to keep her love life away from the public eye, thus not a lot is known about whom she might have dated. In 2016, she posted a photo on Instagram featuring a man named John Rich, who appeared to have been her boyfriend at the time, however, Betty hasn’t revealed any further detail about their relationship.
Nowadays, she mainly posts about her upcoming projects on social media, and hasn’t been spotted spending time with a potential partner.

Hobbies and interesting facts

Her love for animals inspired her to pursue a veterinary degree, but although she’s chosen a different career path later in life, she still donates money to local animal shelters, and has an adopted pet dog called Cocoa Pebbles.
