Bernard King grew up in Brooklyn where he went to the Fort Hamilton high school before moved south to study at the University of Tennessee. In 1977, the New Jersey Nets selected him with the 7th pick overall in the NBA Draft, and he immediately exploded in his rookie season setting the franchise’s record for most points scored in a season with 1,909. King earned his place in the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1978, averaging 24.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. His net worth was certainly improving.
King stayed for another season in New Jersey before moved to the Utah Jazz, but suffered a serious injury and missed most of the year, playing in only 19 games. Bernard stayed in New York for one more season, and then moved to the Washington Bullets.
King spent four seasons with the Bullets and was a key player of the team, averaging over 20 points per game in three of four seasons. In 1990-91, King averaged 28.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, more than enough to appear for the fourth and last time at the All-Star Weekend. He returned to where it had all started in New Jersey, but constant knee issues forced him to end his career after successful 16 years.
