Who is Barbara Mori?

Barbara Mori Ochoa is a well-known model, actress, writer and producer. Over the years she gained huge popularity primarily for her role in the telenovela ‘Rubi’.

Early life and family

Barbara Mori Ochoa was born on 2 February 1978, in Montevideo, Uruguay to her Mexican mother Rosario Ochoa, and Japanese-Uruguayan father Yuyi Mori, so she has dual Mexican and Uruguayan nationality. At the age of three, her parents went their separate ways, and due to that, she spent her childhood in two cities in Mexico and Uruguay.

The separation of her parents had a serious impact on her, which made her realize that she needed to learn how to be independent at a young age. When she was 12 years old, she settle in Mexico City, then when she turned 17 she moved in with her cousins.

Barbara also has two siblings, sister Kenya Mori who is a known actress, and brother Kintaro Mori.

Modeling career

At the age of 14, Barbara Mori was discovered by famous fashion designer Marcos Toledo. When working as a restaurant waitress, and she subsequently modeled until she was 17. From there on her life started to change.

Acting career

Barbara Mori went to college at El Centro de Estudios de Formacion Actoral, where she learned about acting.

She first appeared on screen in the Mexican soap opera ‘Al Norte del Corazon’, then acted in the comedy series ‘Tic Tac’. The following year she appeared in the Mexican telenovela ‘Mirada de Mujer’, and won the Best New Actress award for her role in the TVs Novelas, after which her career starting to grow.

In 2004, Barbara Mori landed the main role in the telenovela soap opera ‘Rubi’, co-starring with famous Mexican actors such as Sebastian Rulli, Eduardo Santamarina and Jacqueline Bracamontes. The show became a big hit, for which she won another award for Best Lead Actress in the category Girl of my Dreams.

She also acquired the main role as Zoe in the movie ‘La Mujer de mi Hermano’, the role of her husband was played by her Christian Meire; they had worked together before in the show ‘Me muero por ti’. The role won her the award for Mexican Actress of the Year.

Barbara also acted in the 2006 Chilean- Mexican movie ‘Pretendiendo’, but which was heavily criticized as being unoriginal.

Then in 2008, Barbara Mori made an unexpected appearance in the Bollywood romantic movie thriller ‘Kites’, directed by Indian producer Rakesh Roshan, in which she co-starred with Indian actor Hrithik Roshan. The production of the movie started at the end of July 2008, and it was scheduled to be released in May 2010.

The movie was such a success and she won the award for ‘Best Actress.’

Barbara Mori also acted in the psychological movie ‘Amor Dolor y Viceversa’ with actor Leonardo Sbaraglia. This crime thriller was produced by herself, and the story is about a female architect who is involved in the murder of her fiancé, who she constantly saw in her dreams. The movie was filmed in Mexico City, but was criticized and had mixed opinions from the viewers.

In 2011, Barbara appeaed in action drama called ‘Viento En Contra’, in which she showed outstanding skills in acting alongside with actors Hector Arredondo and Fernando Lujan. She directed the movie, while was released by ‘Warner Bros’. The same year she won the award for ‘Mexican Actress of the Year’.

Other careers

Besides her successful acting and modeling career, Barbara Mori is a businesswoman. She has her clothing line called ‘Barbara Mori Seduction’, which includes a line of lingerie. She also has her brand of vodka called Vodka Pure Wondermori, and in Mexico she has a chain of fast food restaurants called Fat Mori Burger. She owns shares in several other companies.

Personal life and relationships

Barbara Mori was romantically involved with actor Sergio Mayer – they started dating in the late ’90s. In 1998 she gave birth to a son they named Sergio Mayer Mori, but the couple went their separate ways shortly afterwards.

She also dated other celebrities such as Columbian actor Manolo Cardona, and fashion designer Jose Maria Torre.

There were some rumors about her being involved with famous Indian actor Hrithik Roshan who was married at the time to Sussane, started because there was some great chemistry between them on screen, but they denied the affirmation, saying that they are just good friends.

In 2016 she married baseball player Kenneth Ray Sigma, but their marriage lasted for only a year, as they divorced in 2017.

In 2000, Barbara Mori was diagnosed with cancer, fortunately discovered at an early stage and she became a cancer survivor. She shared her struggles in a documentary drama called ‘1 a Minute’ which was directed by UniGlobe Entertainment, released in 2010, and featuring Namrata Sing Gujral and other cancer survivors such as Diahann Carroll and Jaclyn Smith.
