From an early age Andre was interested in baseball, and would often watch first team trainings. As he got older he started participating in those trainings, and the players would hit him ground balls. His career started in 1975, when he was selected by the Montreal Expos as the 250th pick. The following year he made his major league debut and played in 24 games in the season. 1977 year was his breakthrough year, as he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award; he played as an outfielder and batted .282 with 19 home runs and 21 stolen bases.
