Amy grew up in her hometown, raised by her homestay mother, and a father who worked as a lawyer. She went to Lake Highlands High School, after which she enrolled at Southern Methodist University, from which she graduated with a bachelor`s degree in theater, and went on to further her education with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While in college, Acker launched her fashion career posing for the J. Crew catalog, but soon after graduation ventured into the acting world.

Amy made her screen debut in the TV series “Wishbone” (1997-1998), and before 2000 started she featured in another series – “To Serve and Protect” (1999). In 2001 she was cast in the role of Winifred Burkle/Illyria in the TV series “Angel”, and stayed in the show until 2004, earned a considerable amount towards her net worth, but also her popularity soared. In 2002 she appeared in several successful projects, including “Groom Lake” and “Catch Me If You Can”, which also added to her net worth. In 2005, she was chosen for the role of Kelly Peyton, appearing in 13 episodes, and in 2006 landed the role of Jill Yarrut in the film “The Novice”. In 2008 she starred in the fantasy film “The Dragon Chronicles: Fire and Ice”, alongside Tom Wisdom and John Rhys-Davies, however the film was a complete failure.

The next year Amy landed the lead role in “21 and a Wake-Up”, and also featured in the TV series “Dollhouse” through 2009 and 2010. In 2011 Amy was once again the lead, this time portraying Molly in the film “Sironia”, and 2012 was quite successful for Amy too, as she appeared in films “The Cabin in the Woods”, and “Much Ado About Nothing”, while she was also selected for the role of Samantha “Root” Groves in the TV series “Person of Interest” (2012-2016), which increased her net worth by a large margin. She focused on the show, but still managed to secure roles in such TV series as “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated”, in which she lent her voice to Nova, and “Con Man” (2015-2016) as Dawn Jones.

Most recently, Amy was selected for the roles Lilly James in “A Nutcracker Christmas” (2016), Amanda in “When Jack Went Glamping”, and Claire in “The Energy Specialist”, all of which will be released by the end of 2016, and which will certainly increase further Amy`s net worth.

Quotes

#Quote
1[on knowing Joss Whedon before the role of Fred on Angel (1999)] I wouldn't say I knew much about Joss Whedon, but I did know about Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997). My boyfriend in college, his roommate and his girlfriend had 'Buffy' pizza night every Tuesday. At first I was like, 'I don't know about this show, a vampire show,' and immediately got sucked in. I was like, 'This is the best writing ever.'
2[interview in "Fresno Bee", 2/4/04, on her Angel (1999) character Fred] Looking back at my character, I've gotten to do about 12 different parts because I started out crazy, in a potato sack, in a demon dimension. Now I'm in charge of this multi-million-dollar science lab. The journey between those points has really brought a lot of strength to the role.
3[1/23/03] I want to be strong and a vampire slayer.
4[1/23/03, on her Angel (1999) character Fred facing the evil vampire Angelus as played by star David Boreanaz, who ad-libbed a lot of his lines] I think it's great; he has so much fun playing that character. It's a lot of improvisation and taking risks. You never know what he's going to say; it changes from take to take. He's definitely trying to make a shock; he's going out of his way to make me uncomfortable. It's hard. She [Fred] has heard everything he can do. He's bringing out some of the vulnerability in Fred.
5[3/17/03, on meeting Alyson Hannigan, whose Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) character "Willow" crossed over to take part on Angel (1999) for the season-4 episode, Angel: Orpheus (2003)] This is our first time actually meeting each other. She's pretty cool, so I'm hoping that Joss will maybe make me a witch or something, too.
