Ami spent much of his childhood in Israel and Egypt – his father left the family when he was four years old. At this age he started being drawn into tattoos as his father was an artist, including tattoos. When he was 12 years old he moved to the United States with his grandparents, settling in Miami, but returned to Israel in his teens to complete military service as part of the Israel Defense Forces, apparently becoming a proficient sniper. At the age of 15, he got his first tattoo, and decided to pursue tattooing as a career.

In 1992, he started an apprenticeship at Tattoos By Lou, moving to live in Denmark for a while to improve his craft. Eventually, he and his friend Chris Nunez started the tattoo parlor Love Hate Tattoos, which would grow in popularity, and were approached by TLC to make a reality television program that became “Miami Ink”. The show portrays him as a very tough and short-tempered individual as he has the responsibility of making sure that the tattoo artists are able to do the best work while still maintaining creative control. His net worth was now well established.

Since the popularity of his first business, James has been expanding into other business endeavors including the Deville Clothing Company, Love Hate Lounge, and Love Hate Choppers in which he collaborates with jeweller Larry Weymouth. Ami was also becoming popular with his designs, and was responsible for creating the Motorola RAZR V3 phones.

In 2011, he moved to New York and started the show “NY Ink” which lasted for two seasons. He then opened a tattoo studio in London, called Love Hate Social Club, which often attracts guest tattoo artists including Megan Massacre and Darren Brass. Aside from these, he co-founded the online platform Tattoodo which is about getting custom designs for tattoos. He also appeared in a PETA advertisement for their “Ink Not Mink” campaign.

For his personal life, it is known that Ami was married to Andrea O’Brian but they annulled after a year. He then married Jordan Kidd and they have two children – according to reports, he had an affair with Jordan during her first marriage that led to the annulment.
