His parents divorced when he was a toddler, and his mother remarried Robin Brockway. He grew up in Parsons Green, South-West London, with his four brothers.

Edward and Kate Winslet met for the first time in 2011 on Necker Island, where Sir Richard Branson has his vast estate. The two started dating, Edward proposed to her in the summer of 2012, and the couple married on 5 December 2012.
