Who is Sophie Hunter?

An actress with over 15 credits to her name, a singer, playwright and avant-garde theatre director, Sophie Irene Hunter rose to prominence after she made her directing debut in 2007, working on the experimental play entitled “The Terrific Electric”, which brought her theatre company the Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award that year.

In the following years, Sophie directed an Off-Off-Broadway play “Ghosts” in 2010, which was premiered at the Access Theatre in New York City, and then in the following year she directed the performance art “Lucretia”, based on the opera “The Rape of Lucretia” by Benjamin Britten, premiered at Location One’s Abramovic Studio, also located in New York City.

Sophie was born under the zodiac sign of Pisces on 16 March 1978, in Hammersmith, London, England – her nationality is British, and her ethnicity is English, although many people think that she’s French because she lived in France for a while.

She was raised alongside her two brothers, Patrick and Timothy, by their parents Anna Katharine and Charles Rupert, who later divorced. From her father’s second marriage, Sophie has two half-siblings, Samuel and Lily-Rose.

Sophie made her acting debut portraying Bella Monday in an episode of the series “Midsomer Murders” in 2004, followed by her role as Lois in “Keen Eddie”, and as Anna in “My Life in Film” in the same year, then she was seen as Sophronia in the documentary TV mini-series “Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire” in 2006.

In the following year, she guest-starred in “Mumbai Calling”, before her role as Anne Boleyn in another documentary series – “Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant” in 2009. Then Sophie was seen as Vanessa in two episodes of the series “Torchwood”, before her role as Witch in the episode “Macbeth” of the famous series “Great Performances” in 2010, which was her most recent television role.

Roles in movies

Sophie made her big-screen debut portraying Maria Osborne in the 2004 movie “Vanity Fair”, also starring Reese Witherspoon, James Purefoy, and Romola Garai, followed by her role as Christine in the TV movie “Friends & Crocodiles” in 2005.

Three years later, she was cast to play Maureen Corbett in “The Curse of Steptoe”, followed by her role as Kate in “Strangers”, and next was seen starring as Annabel Blythe-Smith in the 2009 movie “Burlesque Fairytales”, also starring her husband, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Before she met her future husband, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sophie was in a long-term relationship with sculptor Conrad Shawcross, whom she met at Oxford; the two broke up in early 2010.

Sophie and Benedict met on the set of the movie “Burlesque Fairytales”, however, at that time she was in a relationship with Conrad, and Benedict was seeing Olivia Poulet, so it took four years for Sophie and Benedict to start dating, in 2013.

In 2014, Benedict went to Sophie’s mother’s house to ask her for permission to propose to Sophie, and after she gave them her blessing, the couple announced their engagement in the Marriages section of the British newspaper “The Times”.

On 14 February 2015, the two married in a wedding ceremony held on the Isle of Wight, England, in the presence of their closest family members and friends. Their first son, Christopher Carlton was born in 2015, and the second, Hal Auden in 2017, while the youngest, Fin, was born in 2018.

He started his acting career in 2002, and during his 20 years long career, besides the Oscar nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his performances in movies “The Imitation Game” in 2015, and in “The Power of the Dog” in 2022, he has another 157 award nominations, and 70 wins.

Some of his most notable roles, besides those mentioned, have been in films such as “Doctor Strange”, “Star Trek into Darkness”, and “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, among many others.

The television audience perhaps knows him best as Sherlock Holmes from the series “Sherlock”, and as Patrick Melrose in the eponymous TV mini-series, which was nominated for five Primetime Emmys in 2018.
