To begin with, the boy grew up with his mother and his Danish stepfather, among others, in Chicago and Denver. He attended the University of Northern Colorado, University of Colorado in Boulder, and Illinois University, but there’s no record of graduation.
Concerning his professional career, he started working as a radio DJ, until he founded the band Special Affect with Groovie Mann. In 1981, Jourgensen founded the band Ministry under the label Wax Trax records; initially rather electro pop, the group took a turn to become an industrial metal band. The band has released more than 10 studio albums, with the most successful “Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs” (1992) certified platinum, and peaking at 27th position on Billboard Albums. In 2008, the band was considered to be dissolved, but returned in 2012 with a new album. In 1983, Jourgensen was co-founder of the Revolting Cocks, then in 1989, he founded the project Acid Horse alongside Chris Connelly, Stephen Mallinder, Paul Barker and Richard H. Kirk. However, none of the bands or projects were as successful as Ministry.
Many of Jourgensen’s texts reflect personal experiences with heroin and cocaine, but some are also political, in particular a critic of President George W. Bush. Al is also known for his alcohol and drug addiction. The amputation of a toe and the imminent amputation of an arm, the latter, however, as a result of a spider bite, were the triggers of going drug free in the early 2000s. Jourgensen told journalist Jon Wiederhorn all of his life experiences, including many excesses committed under the influence of drugs. He also admitted that he almost died of health problems caused by drinking alcohol in 2010. The material appeared as a biography under the title “Ministry: The Lost Gospels According to Al Jourgensen” in 2013. In 2014, he was treated in a withdrawal clinic because of alcohol addiction.
Finally, in the personal life of the singer, Jourgensen was married to Patty Marsh between 1984 and 1993, and they have one daughter. He married his second wife Angelina Lukacin, at the Graceland mansion in 2002, however they divorced in 2014. Currently, Jourgensen lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend Liz Walton.
