Who is Shay Mooney?

American singer-songwriter James Shay Mooney was born in Natural Dam, Arkansas USA, on 27 December 1991, meaning that his zodiac sign is Capricorn. He’s probably known best for being one half of the country pop music duo Dan + Shay, with the other half being Dan Smyers; the two men are today signed to Warner Records Nashville, and have released nine singles and four albums, with two of their singles having peaked at #1 on the Hot Country Songs Chart. Some of the musicians with whom Dan + Shay have collaborated include Kelly Clarkson, Lindsey Stirling and Justin Bieber.

In 2019, 2020 and 2021, the duo won three Grammys for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, for their songs “10,000 Hours”, “Speechless” and “Tequila”.

Education and early life

Shay was raised alongside his older sisters Gabrielle Mooney and Erica Bankston on a farm in Natural Dam, by their father Rick Mooney and mother Cindy (nee Reed); Shay can rarely be heard talking about his parents in public, because he respects their privacy, but it’s known that his sister Gabrielle’s also a country musician, and that Erica’s a real estate agent.

Shay grew up being interested in a number of activities, as he enjoyed helping out his father on the farm, playing various sports with his friends at school, and singing – he was 14 when he began writing songs, and 16 when he began playing the guitar. He studied at Van Buren High School, and upon matriculating in 2010, enrolled at Valley Forge Christian College, but from which he dropped out a year later, wanting to pursue music; Shay also attended the Union Christian Academy.

Before he and Dan launched their duo, Shay was a solo musician signed to Nappy Boy Entertainment, and Dan was a member of the band Bonaventure, while he had previously been a member of the band Transition, signed to Floodgate Records.

It was in December 2012 that Dan and Shay were introduced at a party at Dan’s home, and they began performing together only a day later; they wrote a song for the country music band Rascal Flatts, but the deal was put on hold. They quickly gained recognition in the music industry, and were invited to sign with a number of record labels, and chose Warner/Chappell Music.

Dan + Shay’s debut single “19 You + Me” began airing on country radio on 14 October 2013, and it was Danny Orton who had helped the boys write the song, which received mostly positive reviews. On 1 April 2014, their debut album “Where It All Began” was released, produced by Danny and Scott Hendricks, and the same year saw Dan and Shay perform in the popular talk-show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”; they also performed at the weekly country music stage concert Grand Ole Opry in 2014, and were nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award for Vocal Duo of the Year. The third single from their album, entitled “Nothin’ Like You” topped the Country Airplay Chart in 2015.

They spent a lot of time in 2014 and 15 touring around the US, and on 3 June 2016, Dan + Shay released their second album “Obsessed” – the album’s second single “How Not To” topped the Country Airplay Chart.

From November 2016 to April 2017, Dan and Shay were on their The Obsessed Tour, but also released their new single “Road Trippin” on 17 July 2017. Their third album “Dan + Shay” came out on 22 June 2018, and its single “Tequila” peaked at #40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart; on 11 February 2019, they released their single “All to Myself”.

Dan and Shay embarked on their Dan + Shay Tour in February 2019, and completed it in April. Their new single “10,000 Hours” was released in October 2019, recorded in collaboration with Justin Bieber; it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. They embarked on their The Arena Tour in October 2019, but postponed many of their concerts and further tours because of coronavirus. Their new single “I Should Probably Go To Bed” came out on 31 July 2020, and was followed by “Glad You Exist” on 5 February 2021; their fourth album “Good Things” was released on 13 August 2021.

Most recently, on 18 July 2022, Dan + Shay released their new single “You”.

Love life and wife

Shay’s more or less open when it comes to talking about his love life in public, and it’s widely known that he’s today a married man, as well as a father of two.

He proposed to American model and actress Hannah Billingsley in the first half of 2017, after the two had been together for almost two years; Hannah gave birth to their first son Asher James Mooney on 24 January 2017, and she and Shay married on 20 October 2017, in a large ceremony attended by all their family members and many friends. On 21 February 2020, Hannah gave birth to their second son Ames Alexander Mooney.

Hannah’s quite active on her Instagram account ‘Hannah Love Mooney’, and there are nearly 100,000 people following her on the social media network today, while she’s posted close to 1,300 pictures and videos.

Shay hasn’t mentioned other women whom he’s dated, he’s married to Hannah Billingsley as of November 2022, and they have two sons together.

One can say that Shay’s an Instagram star, as there are nearly 300,000 people following him on the social media network today, while he’s posted over 1,700 pictures and videos, most of which feature him spending time with Hannah and their sons; the family enjoys spending time in nature, and are living on a ranch.

Shay enjoys playing various sports with his friends, with golf and basketball being his favorites. He also has multiple training sessions at the gym every week, and avoids eating fast food.

Some of his favorite country singers are Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks and Hank Williams.
