Samuel Henry John Worthington was born on 2 August 1976, in Godalming, Surrey, England, the son of Ronald W. Worthington, a power plant employee, and his wife Jeanne J., a housewife. The family moved to Perth, Western Australia, when Sam was just six months old.

He went to John Curtin College of the Arts, a school that specializes in the dramatic arts. However, he didn’t graduate, and when he dropped out of school, his father gave him $400 and a ticket to Cairns, Queensland, almost 3,000 miles away, or 4,000kms, telling him to ‘work his way home.’

Sam worked in construction, and held several odd jobs, eventually finding a flat in Sydney and working as a bricklayer. Nevertheless, his dreams of becoming an actor never subsided, and he auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

He was admitted, and even received a scholarship for his studies. Sam made his acting debut in 2000 as Dunsmore in two episodes of the TV series “JAG”. Sam continued with popular roles such as PFC Lucas in the film “The Great Raid” (2005), then as Macbeth in the modern retelling of the Shakespearean drama “Macbeth” (2006). It was in 2009 that he secured the role of his career as Jake Sully, a paraplegic former US Marine who is sent to wage war between humans and the indigenous Na’vi people of the moon Pandora, in the epic science-fiction film “Avatar”. The film became the highest-grossing film of all time, and made Jake a star.

Since then, he’s been featured in several other popular projects, including “Clash of the Titans” (2010), “Sabotage” (2014), and “Fractured” (2019). He is set to star in the ‘Avatar’ sequel, scheduled to premiere on 16 December 2022.
