Samuel Henry John Worthington was born on 2 August 1976, in Godalming, Surrey, England, the son of Ronald W. Worthington, a power plant employee, and his wife Jeanne J., a housewife. The family moved to Perth, Western Australia, when Sam was just six months old.

He went to John Curtin College of the Arts, a school that specializes in the dramatic arts. However, he didn’t graduate, and when he dropped out of school, his father gave him $400 and a ticket to Cairns, Queensland, almost 3,000 miles away, or 4,000kms, telling him to ‘work his way home.’

Sam worked in construction, and held several odd jobs, eventually finding a flat in Sydney and working as a bricklayer. Nevertheless, his dreams of becoming an actor never subsided, and he auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
