Who is Ayo Edebiri?

Ayo was born in Boston, Massachusetts USA, on 3 October 1995 – her zodiac sign’s Libra, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress, comedienne, film writer and producer, with close to 20 acting credits, while she’s perhaps known best for her portrayal of Hattie in six episodes of the hit biographical comedy series “Dickinson”, created by Alena Smith, and which starred Hailee Steinfeld, Adrian Enscoe and Anna Barushnikov. It tells the life story of rebellious poet Emily Dickinson, who was born on 10 December 1830 and died on 15 May 1886; the series aired from 2019 to 2021 and won three of the 13 awards for which it was nominated.

Early life and education

Ayo was raised in Boston an only child, by her Pentecostal parents; her father had emigrated from Nigeria prior to her birth, and her mother from Barbados. Ayo respects her parents’ privacy, and thus hasn’t shared many details about them.

She was 14 when she became interested in both acting and comedy, having joined her school’s drama club and attended her first drama class; not long after this, Ayo became a member of Boston Latin School’s improv club. She also enjoyed dancing, playing sports and practicing creative writing during her teenage years.

Ayo completed her high school education in 2014 and then enrolled at New York University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching in 2018.

Roles in TV series

Ayo’s TV series debut was her portrayal of Stacey in the 2014 episode “Public Display of Affection” of the drama mini-series “Defectives”. Her following role came in 2020, when cast to star in the comedy mini-series “Ayo and Rachel are Single”.

Beginning in 2020, Ayo’s been voicing Missy Foreman-Greenwald and Mosaic Missy in the hit animated romantic comedy “Big Mouth”, created by Andrew Goldberg and Jennifer Flackett, and which stars Nick Kroll, Jessi Klein and John Mulaney. It follows a group of friends who’ve just reached puberty, the series has been airing since 2017 and has won nine awards, including two Primetime Emmys, while it’s been nominated for 49 other awards.

Also since 2020, Ayo’s been voicing Frances in the animated comedy “Bigtop Burger”, created by Ian Worthington, and which stars Lindsay Small-Butera, Olivia Craighead and Tim Batt; it follows the people working at Bigtop Burger food truck.

Concurrently, she played Eve Stone in the 2021 episode “Social Justice Sex Tape” of the comedy drama “The Premise”, and as of 2022, Ayo’s portraying one of the lead characters Sydney Adamu in the drama “The Bear”, created by Christopher Storer, and which also stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach; it follows a young and talented chef who’s begun running his parents’ sandwich shop in Chicago, Illinois.

Ayo’s debut film appearance was in the 2015 short comedy “LARP”, while the year 2017 saw her play the lead character in the short drama “It Was Sometimes Like This”.

She gained recognition with her portrayal of Emily in the 2020 romantic comedy drama “Shithouse”, written and directed by Cooper Raiff, who also starred in it alongside Dylan Gelula and Amy Landecker. The movie follows a college freshman who’s befriended his resident assistant at a fraternity party; the film won three of the seven awards for which it was nominated.

Ayo could then have been seen playing Nikki in the 2020 romantic drama “Cicada”, Stand Up Comedienne in the 2021 comedy “How It Ends”, and Khadijah in the 2021 comedy “As of Yet”.

Most recently, in 2022, she played Stella in the popular romantic comedy drama “Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between”, directed by Michael Lewen, and in which she starred alongside Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder. Ayo’s interested in fashion, and often shows her outfits in her Instagram pictures; running her Instagram account’s one of her hobbies, and she’s today followed by more than 100,000 people, and has uploaded nearly 600 pictures and videos.

She loves to read books in her spare time, but is yet to talk about her favorite authors and books.

Ayo’s deeply religious, and goes to church at least once a week.

She’s a huge fan of the late actor/director Orson Welles, and of the 1941 mystery movie “Citizen Kane”, which he directed and starred in alongside Joseph Cotton and Dorothy Comingore. It follows a group of reporters as they’re trying to figure out what ‘Rosebud’ means, which was the last word spoken by the dying publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane.
