What is “Selling Sunset”?

Netflix’s American reality television series “Selling Sunset,” was created by Adam DiVello. In his 2020 interview with “Vanity Fair,” Adam shared how he got the idea for the series after seeing an Oppenheim Group advertisement in a magazine. ‘I ripped it out and gave it to my development executive… and I said, ‘Call these people, get me an interview with them.’’ The interview went well and Adam felt it was a ‘no-brainer’ to proceed with the series made up of an all-female cast with their two male bosses.

The series follows the professional and personal lives of agents working at a sophisticated real estate agency firm, the Oppenheim Group, based in Newport Beach and West Hollywood, Los Angeles. It has been running since 21 March 2019, and has released five seasons so far, the latest having premiered on 22 April 2022. Netflix renewed the series for a sixth and seventh season on 23 June 2022, following the success of the fifth season. Primetime Emmy Awards nominated the series in 2021 for the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program award.

The series’ cast list is quite interesting. The main cast members are twin brothers and co-founders of the Oppenheim Group, Jason and Brett Oppenheim. Mary Fitgerald is a real estate agent who previously dated Jason, but married Romain in the finale of season two. Romain starts off in the series purely as Mary’s boyfriend, who works as a model, but he eventually gets into the real estate business too. The rest of the cast is made up of more agents, some of whom are former models, as well as an interior designer.

Career

When Romain first moved to Los Angeles, he began working as a pastry chef. His reason for moving to Los Angeles was actually due to some encouragement from his representation who informed him that he would get more modeling gigs by living in L.A.  He’s represented by Wilhelmina Models talent and modeling agency, which was established in 1967.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was working for The Oppenheim Group as a project manager. Mary recently told “Women’s Health” that ‘He does construction now’ and is ‘… a project manager for a bunch of our listings, a lot of people don’t know that.’ She praised her husband’s work ethic, complimenting his leadership skills and his ability to handle high quantities of work even when he has a lot of jobs at the same time. She added that she believes they are both lucky to have been able to continue working during the quarantine because their industries and careers are considered essential.

Personal life

Romain and Mary met through mutual friends in 2017 and started dating soon after then. Romain proposed to Mary a year later in the presence of their families and she accepted, they married in Los Angeles the following October in a French-themed ceremony and reception. “People” reported that he wore a Sebastian Cruz Couture suit while Mary wore a beautiful Floravere wedding gown, paired with Christian Louboutin heels. Mary’s son, Austin walked her down the aisle.

During season one of “Selling Sunset,” Mary spoke about her and Romain’s twelve-year age gap, ‘So, babe, you’re 25, you’re not really that much older than my son.’ Viewers were not so sure the pair was right for each other with regards to their age gap and the fact that their lives were going in different paths. They had some issues during season one, but by season two, their problems were resolved and they married. However, during season three, they disagreed about starting a family – Mary was considering freezing her eggs as she is getting older and will possibly want more children in the future. In season four, they argued over finances, because Mary is a top-selling agent, she earns more money than Romain which doesn’t bother her, but it does bother Romain. Mary also revisited the subject of freezing her eggs in season four, sharing that she ended up freezing her eggs, but Romain’s position on starting a family is still unclear.

During a dinner in season four, Mary approached the subject of purchasing a new home with Romain. As a realtor, she had the intel that the property market was rising, especially in the area she wanted to buy in. Mary explained that if they didn’t buy the particular house she was eyeing, they would soon enough miss out on their dream home. However, Romain did not agree with his wife. Mary was happy to pay the majority for the house, but Romain argued that he wanted to pay at least half of the house’s price but was not in the financial position to do so. Later in the episode, Mary spoke to fellow star, Amanza Smith about their situation
