Ed was raised in Oxford by his Irish parents who separated when he was 10; he found comfort in music and was mostly into listening to post-punk bands, such as The Police, Adam and the Ants and Siouxsie and the Banshees. He studied at Abingdon School, and it was there that the members of Radiohead met each other; they formed their band On a Friday in 1985, and it would then be renamed to Radiohead. Ed matriculated in 1982, and then enrolled at University of Manchester, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1986.

Alongside his bandmates Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway, Ed played a crucial role in shaping Radiohead’s music style; the band’s debut album “Pablo Honey” was released in 1993 and featured Ed’s dynamic guitar work, and its lead single “Creep” became a hit, propelling Radiohead into the international spotlight.

It was with Radiohead’s subsequent albums that Ed’s influence became even more noticeable; the release of the 1995 album “The Bends” and the 1997 album “OK Computer” marked a significant shift in the band’s sound, with Ed’s guitar-playing contributing to the albums’ experimental nature. Songs “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” and “Karma Police” became hits, and showcased Ed’s skills on the guitar.

As Radiohead continued to evolve, so did Ed’s role within the band; the release of their 2000 album “Kid A” and the 2001 album “Amnesiac” saw Radiohead explore electronic and experimental elements. Ed’s willingness to embrace new technologies and incorporate unconventional guitar techniques added to the band’s new sound; his work on the track “Idioteque” demonstrated his adaptability and willingness to push boundaries.

Beyond his contributions to Radiohead, Ed’s engaged in various side projects and collaborations; he formed the duo 7 Worlds Collide with Neil Finn of Crowded House, while they also collaborated with other popular musicians. Ed’s solo work has further demonstrated his diverse musical abilities.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Ed’s been an advocate for environmental and social causes. He’s been vocal about climate change, and has actively supported organizations dedicated to sustainability and conservation.
