Alex Martin is an American actress and film producer, who’s worked on several projects during her career, but she is possibly still best known to the world as the daughter of the Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg.

Alexandrea Martin was born on 9 May 1973 in New York, USA, the daughter of Whoopi Goldberg and her first husband, Alvin Martin. Alex’s father was born in the ‘50s and was Goldberg’s drug counselor whom she met at just 16 years old; Alex was born when Whoopi was just 18. The two married the same year but divorced in 1979, after which Whoopi took Alex with her to California, in pursuit of a comedy career.

However, before Woopi’s career took off, she resorted to several odd jobs, such as working as a bank teller, and a mortuary cosmetologist, and numerous others to make ends meet. Alex’s mother remarried David Claessen, a Dutch cinematographer, and director in 1986, when Alex was 13 years old, but their marriage ended two years later. By that time, Alex was already taking steps towards an acting career, appearing in the Academy Award-nominated film “The Color Purple”, directed by Steven Spielberg, with Whoopi, Danny Glover  and Oprah Winfrey in the lead roles.

Alex’s mother married for the third time to Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994, but the two divorced the following year; Alex was out of the house by that time, living her own life and raising her own daughter.

Alex finished high school in 1991, and became entirely focused on her acting career instead of pursuing further education.

Alex made a few on-screen appearances in the ‘90s next to her mother, including “Quest of the Delta Knights” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, which also featured Kathy Najimy and Maggie Smith both in 1993. Six years later, she was Hugh in the comedy film “American Intellectuals” written and directed by Paige Taylor, with Rod Biermann, Allison Dean and Peter Gibson.

In 2001, she had a minor role in the television movie “Call Me Claus”, while in 2003, Alex appeared in Francisco Roel’s thriller-drama film “Strange as Angels”, with Cristoforo Aguilar, Ben Aimlay and Rai Alexandra in the lead roles.
