After he retired, people were asking why he did that since he was one of the rising stars in the late ’80s – he said that he didn’t like the roles that were offered to him, and he also stated: ‘Actors spend most of their time out of work, so I actually spend more time making furniture.

The thing about furniture that’s much better than acting is that it’s just me. There’s no director, no script – the concept is me, unless a client wants something.’

It was clear that he enjoys his role as the owner of the woodworking shop, where he hand-makes furniture, however, this once ‘heart-breaker’ wasn’t forgotten, as in 2005 the Teen Magazine ranked him in 22nd place on the list of ‘Biggest Hunks of the 1980s’.

As of January 2022, Michael and his wife enjoy their retirement days, away from the public eye, making furniture for their clients; his net worth has been estimated at over $1 million.
