Who is Molly Shannon?
A writer, producer, and comedian, who was a member of the repertory company of “Saturday Night Live” from 1995 until 2010, Molly Helen Shannon is perhaps known best for the eclectic characters she created and presented in the show. However, she is also a well-known actress with over 135 credits to her name; some of the most notable roles she portrayed in television series were in “The Other Two“, “Will & Grace“, and “Enlightened“, while to the movie lovers, Molly is known for starring in “Scary Movie 4“, “Superstar“, and “Never Been Kissed“, among others.
Besides numerous television and movie roles, Molly is also known as a voice actor, and has been heard voicing numerous characters, including Wanda in “Hotel Transylvania” and Millie in “Bob’s Burgers”.
Early life and education
Molly Shannon was born under the zodiac sign of Virgo on 16 September 1964, in Shaker Heights, Ohio USA, thus she holds American nationality and she comes from an Irish-American Catholic family. Her parents, Mary Margaret and James Francis Shannon, were a teacher and a sales manager respectively.
She was raised in her hometown by both of her parents until they had a family tragedy when Molly was four years old. Her father who was driving under the influence caused a car accident and sadly, her mother and her younger sister died.
Speaking of Molly’s educational background, she attended Saint Dominic School and Hawken School, and upon matriculating in 1982, she enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, from which she graduated with a BA degree in 1987.

Molly made her acting debut portraying Meg in the 1989 movie “The Phantom of the Opera”, followed by her role as Traci in “Return to Two Moon Junction” in 1995, and she was then cast to play Homeless Lady in “Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace” in 1996.
In the following years, Molly was seen in “Dinner and Driving”, “Happiness”, and “A Night at the Roxbury” before her appearance as Anita in the 1999 romantic drama “Never Been Kissed”, also starring Drew Barrymore and David Arquette, followed by her role as Mary Katherine Gallagher, a character which she created in “Superstar”, which brought her a nomination for Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Actress- Comedy in 2000.

Molly made her first television appearance portraying Judy Swain in “Twin Peaks” in 1991, followed by her role as Officer Trainee in “In Living Color” in 1992 and ‘93, and then in the following year, she mostly guest-starred in various series, before making her debut in “Saturday Night Live” in 1995.
Concurrently, she was seen as Sam in “Seinfeld“ (1997), as Lily Martin in “Sex and the City“ (2002), while from 2004 until 2006, Molly portrayed Lesley Shackleton in “Cracking Up“, followed by her role as Kristy in “American Dad!“ (2005-2007), after which she was cast to play Kath Day in “Kath & Kim“ (2008-2009).

In the following years, Molly was seen starring in numerous series, including “Raising Hope” (2014), “Divorce” (2016-2019), and “The Other Two” (2019-2021), while it’s worthy of mentioning that she had a recurring role as Val Bassett in “Will & Grace”, which in 2018 brought her another Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, for the episode “There’s Something About Larry”.
