Kayla Noelle Ewell-Novlan was born in Long Beach, California USA, on 27 August 1985 – her zodiac sign is Virgo, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress, perhaps known best for her role of Maureen Sampson in the teenage cult classic sitcom “Freaks and Geeks”.
Early life and education
Kayla grew up in Seal Beach, California, alongside her two siblings. She showed interest in acting from an early age, and started touring with national Broadway company when she was only 12 years old, having roles in several plays including “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”
In 2003, she matriculated from the Los Alamitos High School.

During her time there, she also studied dance, singing and acting at the Orange County Song & Dance Company in Westminster, California, which is when she was noticed by a talent agent, who asked her to audition for roles in movies and TV series.
Roles in TV series
Kayla made her TV series debut in 1999, when she appeared in an episode of the short-lived comedy “Bloodhounds, Inc”. In 2000, she had a supporting role in an episode of the critically-acclaimed mystery crime drama “Profiler”, which starred Ally Walker, Julian McMahon and A. Martinez, and was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards.
In the same year, Kayla appeared as Maureen Sampson in three episodes of the teen comedy drama “Freaks and Geeks”.
The series was created by Paul Feig, and centered on a group of ‘nerdy’ misfit high school students from Detroit, Michigan. Although it aired for only one season due to a conflict between the network and the show’s producers, the series has reached the status of a cult classic, and has been featured in numerous lists of greatest TV shows of all time. “Freaks and Geeks” producer Judd Apatow continued the series’ legacy, and kept working with the actors from the show in future projects, which launched many of them into stardom, including James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel.
Another notable role for Kayla was in the long-running soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful”, in which she played the role of Caitlin Ramirez in 2004 and 2005.
The show was created by Lee Phillip and William J. Belli as a sister series to the popular daytime drama “The Young and the Restless”. It has been airing on CBS since March 1987, and has won more than 100 awards, including four Daytime Emmys.
In the following years, Kayla made numerous episodic appearances in popular TV series, such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, “The O. C.” and “Lucifer”. From 2009 to 2017, she played the recurring character Vicki Donovan, in the popular supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries”, centered on a teenage girl, played by Nina Dobrev, torn between two vampire brothers.
In 2017, she starred alongside Eva Gutowski and Shelby Rabara, in the YouTube Red sitcom “Me and My Grandma”, following a young woman who moves to Los Angeles hoping to become a star, while her grandma tags along in the journey.
Since 2019, Kayla has been playing the recurring character, Nora Truman, in the CW Network’s sci-fi drama “Roswell, New Mexico”, which stars Jeanine Mason, Nathan Parsons and Michael Vlamis. The next season of the show is set to premiere in early 2022.

Kayla made her film debut in the 2006 romantic comedy “Just My Luck”, directed by Donald Pete, and which starred Lindsay Lohan, Chris Pine and Samaire Armstrong. In the same year, she appeared alongside Hillary Duff and Haylie Duff in another romantic comedy, “Material Girls”, centered on two wealthy sisters who get a wake-up call after a scandal and the following criminal investigation strips them of their fortune.
In 2009, Kayla had a supporting role in the sports comedy “Fired Up!”, written and directed by Will Gluck, and which starred Eric Christian Olsen, Nicholas D’Angelo and Sarah Roemer.
Five years later, we saw Kayla in her first leading movie role in the thriller drama “Deadly Daycare”, centered on a young mother who suspects that her four-year-old daughter is being mistreated at her daycare.
In 2017, she played the female lead opposite to Ryan Merriman in the romantic drama “2 Years of Love”, and in the following year she starred in the thriller “A Friend’s Obsession”, directed by Craig Goldstein. Aside from being an actress, Kayla is a philanthropist, and is currently involved with several charity organizations. She is a council member of the non-profit organization The Little Market, which provides economic empowerment to people in vulnerable communities in the US, and worldwide. They operate as an online shop, through which they sell tote bags made from sustainable and recycled materials, with all the profit being transferred to the people in need.
Kayla is also on the board of directors of the non-profit This Is About Humanity, dedicated to providing legal and financial support to the families separated at the US – Mexican border.
Since 2019, she has been hosting the podcast “Directionally Challenged”, along with the actress and singer, Candice King.
Is Kayla married?
Kayla is married to the Canadian actor and model, Tanner Novlan. The two tied the knot in an elegant 1920’s inspired ceremony in downtown Los Angeles on 12 September 2015, after being in a relationship for more than five years. At the time, Kayla was starring in “The Vampire Diaries”, and her wedding attracted vast media attention, with its celebrity guests including some of the series’ stars, such as Nina Dobrev and Candice King.
In March 2019, Kayla and Tanner announced that they were expecting a baby, and on 16 July 2019, the couple welcomed their daughter, Poppy Marie.
Hobbies and interesting facts
Kayla is a very active person who loves to feel some adrenaline, and enjoys outdoor activities such as rock climbing, rappelling and whitewater rafting. She also enjoys dancing, and also was a member of her high school’s surfing team.
She likes to explore her creativity through different outlets, not only though acting, and likes painting and photography in her spare time.
Kayla’s Instagram account reveals that she’s a foodie, as she often posts pictures of the food she’s made herself. This Halloween, she uploaded an adorable photo session of herself and her daughter and husband, dressed as professional cooks.
