Who is John Henton?

John is a retired American actor and comedian perhaps best remembered as Overton Wakefield in the TV series “Living Single” (1993-1998), and several other roles that he had during his active career.

What Happened to John Henton?

John was active in show business until the mid- 2010s; his last on-screen appearance was in the award-winning TV comedy series “Love That Girl!”, which starred Mark Adair-Rios, Bresha Webb and Alphonso McAuley.

Since then, he has been away from the media buzz, and lives in Los Angeles, California, USA, with his partner Michele Delany and their daughter, Nicole Simone.

John Henton was born on 23 November 1960 under the Sagittarius zodiac sign, in East Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He hasn’t talked much about his immediate family, and as a result, his parents’ names are unknown, though he has a sister Lindsay.

He went to Shaw High School, then after matriculation, didn’t seek further education, but instead took computer classes in the evenings.

Career Beginnings

John was working at a paint warehouse but dreamed of becoming a comedian. He performed at an amateur night at a Cleveland comedy club, and for a  second performance which won won him the amateur night contest.

For the next few years, John was making a name for himself in the Cleveland area, then in the early ’90s, he started touring the US, and won the 1991 Johnny Walker National Comedy Search.

During his tour, he was noticed by Jim McCawley, who at the time was a comedy executive on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”. He joined Ed McMahon, Tony Bennett, and Carson after his performance on the show, which marked the start of his professional career.

John acquired an agent, and secured his first “Comic Strip Live” appearance, and scheduled his second appearance on “The Tonight Show” a few months later. His debut comedy special “John Henton: Comedy with an Attitude” came out in 1993.

Rise to Prominence

John was becoming more popular as a comedian, and was selected for the role of Overton ’Obie’ Wakefield-Jones in the TV comedy series “Living Single”. His character was one of the main cast, and he starred in all 118 episodes until 1998, alongside Queen Latifah, Kim Coles, and Erika Alexander. Fans immensely loved his character, and he earned an Image Award nomination in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

He secured another long-running role in 1998, as Milsap Morris in the award-winning TV comedy series “The Hughleys”. The series was created by D.L. Hughley, who also stars in the series as a successful businessman, apparently living the American dream.

John featured in all 89 episodes of the series next to Hughley, Elise Neal and Eric Allan Kramer, among others, earning two Image Award nominations in the category for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

His career slowed down after the end of the series,, but before retirement, he featured in TV series, such as “One on One” (2002), “The Parkers” (2003), and “Hannah Montana” (2009).

He appeared in several comedy shows too, including “Comedy. TV” (2011), “The Arsenio Hall Show” (2013), and “Comics Unleashed” (2014), among others.

When it comes to his personal life, John doesn’t like to talk much about it. However, some details have been revealed. He had a relationship in the late ’90s with an unknown woman, but now rarely talks about it.

John next started a relationship with Michele Delany, The two have been together ever since and share a daughter. They haven’t married, but are living together, and have a few times thought about marrying, but haven’t taken that step.

Car Accident, Near-Death Experience

In 2000, John and the rest of “The Hughleys” were partying in celebration of filming the “Halloween” episode of the series.

After a party, John took his car home, but he never got home that night. He had a car accident at 100mph that left him deformed so much that the plastic surgeons needed pictures of him before the accident to reconstruct his face correctly. His left eye socket was destroyed; he broke both legs, ripped open his stomach, and broke nine teeth.

He was so drunk that he didn’t even recall what happened to him days after he awoke in the hospital bed and his friends and colleagues had to guide him through the events.

Luckily, John was on for a speedy recovery, and just six weeks after the horrific crash, he was ready to be on the set of “The Hughleys” again.

However, the crash left a mark on him and his life on the whole, and he was never the same again, thus his early retirement from show business.
