Donald Andrew ‘Donnie’ McClurkin Jr. was born in Copiague, New York State USA, on 9 November 1959 – his zodiac sign’s Scorpio, and he holds American nationality. Early life and education
Donnie was raised in Copiague alongside his brother and two sisters, by their father Donald Andy McClurkin Sr. and mother Frances McClurkin. Donnie was eight when his brother, who was two at the time, was killed by a speeding driver, and the loss took its toll on the family; Donnie was sexually abused by his great uncle not long after this, and was sexually abused by his great uncle’s son years later. His sisters both struggled with substance abuse, and it was around this time that Donnie found comfort in going to church.
It was his aunt who helped him become a gospel singer, as she sang background vocals for the late American gospel singer-songwriter Andrae Edward Crouch. Donnie was around 11 years old when he founded his first band – McClurkin Singers – while he founded The New York Restoration Choir a couple of years later.
He matriculated from a local high school in 1978, and then chose not to pursue a college degree, but to focus on his career.
Ministry
In 1989, Donnie became an associate minister at Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church, and held the job for more than 10 years.
He was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991, but chose not to undergo medical treatment, putting his health in the hands of God.
In 2001, Donnie was sent to establish Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, New York State, and has since been working as its Senior Pastor.
Career as a singer
Donnie released his self-titled debut long-play (LP) in 1996, produced by five people, including Andrae Crouch and Mark Kibble. The LP’s single “Stand” became a hit, and after the album was praised by American talk-show host, author and actress Oprah Winfrey, it was soon certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
At the 8th Annual Grammy Awards on 6 February 2006, Donnie’s album “Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs” won him a Grammy for Traditional Soul Gospel Album; he’s since won another Grammy, 10 Stellar Awards, two Soul Train Awards, and two BET Awards, amongst others.
His album “Live in London and More” was certified platinum, while his 2009 album “We All Are One: Live In Detroit” topped several music charts.
Guest appearances on radio and TV
Donnie was signed to both Dial-Global and T&T Creative; the latter provided him with a mobile recording studio which he could take with him while touring around the USA. He’s shared with his fans that he loves performing on radio, mostly because of the direct feedback which he receives from his fans all around the country.
Donnie’s TV show “Perfecting Your Faith” debuted on cable television in 2009, while some of the talk-shows in which he’s made a guest appearance include “Good Morning America”, “The Early Show”, and “The Parkers”.
YouTube channel
Donnie launched his YouTube channel “DonnieMcClurkinShow” on 20 January 2010, and it’s today subscribed to by more than 200,000 people, while it numbers over 70 million views of all his videos combined. Most of these feature him talking with various people, both celebrity and non-celebrity, about religion and what it means to them; we’re going to mention three of Donnie’s most popular YouTube videos, which’ve helped him attract many subscribers.
His #1 video “Donnie McClurkin – I Need You (Official Music Video)” has been watched over 23 million times since 1 May 2017, and it’s his original song.
Donnie’s second most popular video “Donnie McClurkin – I Need You (Audio)” has been viewed over a million times since 13 April 2016, and it’s the same song as above, but without its music video.
His #3 video “Donnie McClurkin – There Is God (Live)” has been watched close to 800,000 times since 6 September 2019, and features him talking about his music, as well as singing his song “There Is God”.

Donnie revealed on a Christian website in 2002 that he had become gay because of porn and sexual abuse, but that he was able to turn straight through will and prayer. He was to sing for Barrack Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign, but was removed from the roster because of his views on homosexuality; Donnie spoke against same-sex marriage after the US Supreme Court made it legal nationwide in 2015.
He has a son Matthew, born in 2000, but the name of the boy’s mother remains undisclosed. Donnie’s revealed that he’s been in a relationship with many men and women, but only in a single long-term relationship, with American singer-songwriter Aileen Nicole Coleman-Mullen since 2016. Donnie’s also stated that he might never marry.

Donnie was involved in a serious car accident in 2018, when he lost consciousness while driving; luckily, no one was seriously injured.
He’s physically highly active, and has multiple training sessions at the gym every week, thus his muscular body; Donnie’s also following a strict diet, and avoids eating fast food and sweets.
He’s passionate about travelling, and has been all around the world for both work and pleasure, while his dream travel destination’s Egypt in Africa.
