American rapper and actor Earl Simmons was born in Mount Vernon, New York State USA on 18 December 1970, meaning that his zodiac sign was Sagittarius. He gained recognition with the release of his debut album in 1998, entitled “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot”, and went on to sell more than 70 million albums worldwide prior to his death on 9 April 2021, when he suffered a heart attack apparently caused by cocaine.

DMX was raised in Mount Vernon by his parents Joe Barker and Arnett Simmons; they were 18 and 19 years old respectively when he was born, and was their second child, as Arnett gave birth to her and Joe’s daughter Bonita when she was 17, while she later gave birth to their second daughter Shayla; Joe was mostly absent from the children’s lives.

DMX had a rough childhood as his mother often beat him, and even knocked out two teeth with a broom when he was six; this led him to become a problematic child, as he threw chairs at his teachers and on one occasion stabbed his classmate in the face with a pencil. Aged seven, DMX got drunk on vodka, and was arrested for stealing cakes from a supermarket; he was expelled from school when he was 10, and spent a year and a half at the Julia Dyckman Andrus Children’s Home. DMX was arrested a few months later, after having tried to burn down the school, while he also tried to kill his accomplice; he was 14 when he began living on the street.

He was then sent to another group home, and it was during his time there that he fell in love with rapping; the children for whom he often performed encouraged him to continue writing and performing songs. DMX went on to attend Yonkers Middle High School and was on the school’s track and field team, however, he had poor grades and was involved in a number of robberies as a way to fight poverty.

He was 18 when he was arrested for carjacking, then began working on his career as a rapper upon his release from jail. DMX would record his own mixtapes and sell these on street corners; he was signed to Columbia Records in 1991, and his debut single “Born Loser” was released not long afterwards topped the Billboard 200 Chart, and sold more than five million copies

His first hit single, “Get at Me Dog” was released in February 1998, and his second album “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood” followed in December 1998, also topping the Billboard 200 and becoming certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); DMX’s third album “… And There Was X” was released on 21 December 1999, also topping the Billboard 200.

His following albums were “The Great Depression”, released on 23 October 2001, “Grand Champ” in September 2003 and “Year of the Dog… Again” on 1 August 2006. It took DMX six years to release his seventh album “Undisputed” on 11 September 2012, and he released only one other album prior to his death: the 2021 “Exodus”.

DMX had 17 children with 11 women, and because he didn’t leave a will, legal battles began as soon as he died, and are on-going as of late 2022.
