Born in Detroit, Michigan, Blair is the daughter of Molly Anne and Elliot. Her early years did not involve acting but rather photography; after matriculating from Hillel Day School, she studied photography in Kalamazoo College, but after a year Blair decided to leave and move to New York.

Blair continued her education at New York University, and also took acting classes on the side at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the Stonestreet Screen Acting Workshop. After a couple of years, she transferred to the University of Michigan and graduated magna cum laude in 1994, with a degree in Photography, Psychology, Fine Arts and English.
